When it comes to shooting, Methadone produces no or little rush. Only the warmth/euphoria that sets in after the rush. Some users like the rush, so methadone may not be the first choice for IV-ing.

Darvon (dextropropoxyphene) is structurally very close to methadone (albeit MUCH much weaker) and when it is shot, it produces hardly any warmth or euphoria, but produces a strong rush. (Kinda the converse of methadone)

Also, methadone has very high oral bio-availability (as you already mentioned, 97%), so there's no need to shoot it.

Yes, you have to crush them and add water and cook in a spoon first though (better to crush and snort them if you ask me)

Why is it that heroin addicts can shoot 5 grams and day and die from 30mg of methadone? What makes it so deadly?

methadone causes serious resperatory depression. Your lungs will be cut off from your brain stem, and cease to function. Heroin addicts rarely live beyond 3 years. 5 grams is 4980 mg of water/polyvinylpyrrolidone and 20 mg of heroin, probably shit quality anyway.

Whats the chances of ever being clean if a herion addict goes on methadone to quit heroin, but still continues to shoot up heroin while taking methadone? Please I need help understanding my husband.
He is 46yrs old, has been a addict approx 20 yrs. He holds a good job & seems normal to others. I have never done drugs so this is so hard for me. I am at the end of my rope so to speek.

If he is taking methadone and still using heroin he is not going to get clean. Addiction is a terrible thing and is hard to break. Maybe he needs serious inpatient treatment. Maybe he just doesn't have the desire to quit. Nobody can stop an addiction if they are not ready to.

my 50 yr old mom takes doses of methadone because of an addiction to shooting up oxycotin. she asked me about getting off of it. she starting abusing street drugs due to the stopping of her pain meds after an ankle ingury. i do not understand fully how people get themselves into these situations. but is there an alternative to her pain than doing the dosages. thanx so much

Methadone (Symoron, Dolophine, Amidone, Methadose, Physeptone, Heptadon and many others) is a synthetic opioid, used medically as an analgesic, antitussive and a maintenance anti-addictive for use in patients on opioids. It was developed in Germany in 1937. Although chemically unlike morphine or heroin, methadone also acts on the opioid receptors and thus produces many of the same effects. Methadone is also used in managing chronic pain due to its long duration of action and very low cost. In late 2004, the cost of a one-month supply of methadone was $240, as compared to an equivalent analgesic amount of meperidine (pethidine) at $120, up to $500 and more for hydromorphone, morphine, fentanyl, and extended-release oxycodone (trade name OxyCodone(TM)).

Methadone's usefulness in treatment of opioid dependence is the result of several factors. It has cross-tolerance with other opioids including heroin and morphine, long duration of effects with the result that oral dosing with methadone will stabilise the condition of the patient by stopping and preventing the opioid withdrawal syndrome, and by at least partially blocking the "rush" resulting from intravenous injection of heroin, morphine, and similar drugs.
