I have been on 90 mg's/d for 6 months, but have gradually decreased to 20 mg's/d.
You should speak to your doctor about this. It all depends on the patient. If your doctor recommended that you take clonidine. Then you should wait approximately 3 months with Methadone blood tests every 3 weeks. You should directly speak to your doctor about this.
THIS JUST MIGHT HELP
I have been tapering off Methadone from 80 mg and am now down to 21 mg. I have to quit cold turkey and am wondering how long I will be really sick?
First and foremost, I commend you for having the strength and determination to want to break the ball and chain (methadone). As previously stated, it depends how long you have been on methadone. Usually from two weeks to several months worst case scenario. I would be lying if I told you that this experience will not be physical, emotional, and mental torment. When your at your breaking point, just remember as each day past your closer to normalcy once again. I don't knock anyone taking methadone, but it is like a roller-coaster that never ends.
I quit 120mg methadone cold turkey 4 days ago..
My Doc gave me klonopin, clonidine, and robaxin for the w/d's.. but of course.. i still aint feelin too good.
I was on about 80-120mg of Oxycontin a day for about 1 1/2 - 2 years.. and i was only in the methadone treatment for about 3months. i was just wondering if anyone knew about how long ill be sick for. The way i look at it, i wasnt using for a LONG time so i didnt know if that would make my w/d's go away any quicker.. ive seen some people say about a week coming off cold turkey and some say about a month or two.. any help would make me feel soo much better.
Thanks!
Good for you! It takes a strong person to make the decision to quit using heavy duty drugs. The worst part of the withdrawals will be the first three weeks. You will probably still experience withdrawals to a lesser extent over the next few months. As a natural doctor here is what I recommend people do to help during this period.
The following treatment will help you not go through such agony as you withdraw from the medication.
To help with the withdrawals take hot bathes with 2c. of dissolved Epsom salts and soak for 30 minutes. The skin is the biggest organ of elimination and this will help pull out the drugs. Use a loofa to clean the pores and this will help pull the drugs out even faster.
Drink lots of water and 2c. a day of fresh carrot juice, to flush the medicine out of your liver. You can take 500mg of calcium and magnesium twice a day to help you relax. Drink chamomile tea throughout the day and evening to help you stay relaxed.
Use a powdered fiber supplement twice daily to pull the drugs out of your intestines where they can store.
Two of the questionnaires in this forum did follow this program to withdraw from drugs and it did help. I've enclosed a link where you can read their response to this program.

Hello, I have been on Methadone for about 6 months, never going above a 30mg daily dose so that one day I would be able to quit. In fact I was at 19mg dose but had oral surgery and after taking the prescribed Opiates I needed to jump up to 30mg. Last week I decided that I was fed up of the clinic and did a self imposed rapid detox. I had take home doses and the first day I skipped taking the dose, 2nd day only took 20mg, third day 10mg...then cold turkey....nada, none nothing. Now is the 4th day of no methadone and am not feeling great but also am not dying either. How long will this last, this lack of energy and crazy sleep patterns. I hate the clinic because it is full of drug dealers and the staff seems to try to convince you that you need to keep going up and they act like Methadone isn't a drug, when we all know it is. Well I am just trying to find others opinions on this and any knowledge of how long I will have to endure this mild like flu I am feeling (nothing like I felt trying to quit opiates cold turkey)...>THANKS.
Good for you!!! Quiting any narcotic is hard and the withdrawals can be quite painful! I recently read something on the web about quiting Methadone cold turkey, I'll attach the website for you. You can expect the symptoms to last anywhere from 3-10 days. My doctor has been trying to get me to take Methadone for chronic pain and I refuse to take it. Hang in there, you're doing great!
Apparently if the dose is reduced slowly there is a better chance to quit than just quit it all at once...However I am afraid that as I have not clue about the effects this will make things worst. I am trying to help a friend and don't know absolutely nothing about it... Does anybody know the raccomended quantity and times until he can quit?
Thanks for the answers given...apparently the pain, nausea and cramps are already there...he will not get up from bed, he does not sleep or eat. He has reduce to 20 mg every other day.....is this the right way? He refuses to go to doctors or clinics....
I had to be weaned off Methadone in a hospital setting. It's the safest way. The withdrawal was devistating. Seizures, vomiting and pain were just a part. Please seek a doctor who will help you do this properly.
It is Dangerous to withdraw without help. If you can get him into methadone treatment even at this stage they can make him more comfortable so he won't dehydrate and be so ill. I am so sorry for what he is going through. If he becomes worse even though he is weaning....Call an ambulance and get him help. I cannot tell you what dose works best. As I said I had to be hospitalized before withdrawal and that was bad enough. I hope it works for him. There is no easy way.
Why quitting heroin substitute methadone is 'vital'
The heroin substitute methadone can be used as a way of weaning addicts off heroin but the substitute can also become addictive.
Earlier this year a debate broke out in Scotland when Professor Neil McKeganey, director of the Centre for Drug Misuse Research at the University of Glasgow, said more effort was needed to get people off drugs, including methadone, through abstinence.
But a group of 40 specialists, including university professors and doctors who treat addicts, responded: "If policy makers were to heed the critics' advice to close down methadone treatment or impose an arbitrary time limit on its administration, the community can anticipate more overdose deaths, more HIV and more crime."
So what do recovering addicts think? Chris used methadone for five years to help wean him off heroin but felt he had to quit the drug substitute last October
"I just thought, I've got to get a grip here, because I've been in and out of prison since I was 16 - that's half my life," he told The Report.
