Of course it is legal. Methadone and Xanax (alprazolam) are not even in the same class of drugs, methadone is a synthetic phenylheptylamine opioid analgesic and alprazolam is a benzodiazepine (or more concisely a triazolobenzodiazepine) class anxiolytic, anti-panic, sedative/hypnotic.

Doctors can prescribe as they see fit. It is actually very common for opioids and benzodiazepines to be used together and people with chronic pain may take a drug like methadone routinely and they may also be prescribed another opioid like oxycodone or morphine for break threw pain.

Although Xanax should not be used and it not indicated for pain. Xanax is used to treat acute anxiety states, for the management of anxiety disorders, for panic disorder with or without anxiety, and for anxiety associated with depression.

Some benzodiazepines like Valium (diazepam), Ativan (lorazepam), and Klonopin, Rivotril (clonazepam) are effective as muscle relaxants (particularly diazepam), and clonazepam is particularly effective for treating neuropathic pain.

Methadone, is given to anyone that has an opium based dependency, Excluding xanax.. Moreover given by methadone clinics for oxy cotten addictions and other opium based. If you were to mix the two the only things you would have to worry about are
1 an overdose if the levels are high enough and...
2 A failed drug test, If that is an issue
Hope this helps you, and if you have other addictions, there are much better treatments out there than methadone.. Suboxone is currently being given and has a much better success rate.

The main danger is death. Methadone is a very powerful drug, it is used to curve cravings of heroin so go figure. Xanax (Alprazolam) is also a very powerful sedative, when the two are combined the depress the central nervous system very quickly, as you probably have already found out.
Also they can cause your breathing to slow down or even stop. The way overdose works is that you fall asleep then your breathing stops.
Both Methadone and Xanax are great drugs separately, just don't mix them. It doesn't take much to kill you either, as little as 25mg of Methadone and 2-4mg of xanax combined have been known to cause death. Google Xanax+Methadone+Death and you will get tons of examples.
And as far as your Doctor that prescribed both of them together, I'd find a new Dr. who knows his meds and has your best interest in mind.
Any street level user can tell you that those are two drugs you never want to mix unless you just don't care what happens.

I am currently taking 2-3mg of Xanax a day (percribed). I am also addicted to Oxycontin. I have been taking 80-160mg whenever I can get it. Usually every other day for 2 years. I am going to a Methadone Clinic Tuesday. And I am wondering if they will perscribe me the Methadone scince I am taking Xanax. I am going through withdrawls this weekend. I need help getting off the Oxys, and am very serious about quiting, but don't have insurance to go to doctor, or espically rehab. Can the methadone really help if i'm very serious about quitting. I've heard alot of mixed thing on methadone, i'm just scared cause i really need my xanax on somedays. Thank You

I am currently on 115mgs of methadone. I am addicted to any kind of pain pill. For yrs I was taking 20 to 25 pills a day. Some days I couldn't get the money and I would go thru terrible withdrawl. It would be just like heroine withdrawl. I had to do something with my life and quick or I was going to commit suicide.So I found this clinic and that was 7yrs ago. I have been on 115mgs of methadone that long.I'm scared to come off because they say withdrawls from that drug are awful. But I knew this one guy that was on it, he was taking Xanax along with his methadone. I think thbe people there was trying to ween him off of the xanax though because he was abusing them real bad.He refused to come off of them so they put him out of the program. Last time I heard from him he was in another city on methadone and still taking xanax.People say those benzo's and methadone is one hell of a buzz.They have people outside of the clinic trying to buy the damn things to take with their dose. They usally look for xanax or4 klonapin.You say your really doing bad with the oxycontin. Well, you wont have to worry about them once you start the methadone.When you first start taking the methadone you stay high.That's why some people say bad things about methadone.But when I first started I thought to myself, WOW.....do I feel good!!!!But after a while the high goes away but you also don't feel that craving for pain pills the way you use to. The methadone blocks something in your brain. I forget the medical term they use, but that craving is gone.Somebody could put a whole bottle of ultram in front of my face and say here you go, take all you want. I could get up and turn away from those pills and not look back and I thank God for that every day!!!Sorry I wrote so long, hope I did'nt put you to sleep, but I say go for it. Methadone saved my life!!!!!!~
