Methadone is used for the treatment of heroin addiction, to overcome the withdrawal symptoms, but is it really any useful drug at all. I found out that the Methadone addiction is far more severe than the heroin one. So, if treatment itself is very addicting, then can it be called a treatment. These cannot be administered by any doctor. So is taking all the pains to go to the town with methadone clinic a way out of heroin, or a trap into the methadone addiction. Is there no other effective way to overcome the withdrawal symptoms of heroin. Can anybody explain.
Sterling is right, I'm a recovered alcoholic in my 4th year of recovery thanks to Alcoholics Anonymous and the 12 step program I followed in rehab.
I now work in a drug/alcohol rehab centre myself and confirm that we use Subutex as the drug of choice, together with the help of the same 12 step program that was started by AA we have a very high success rate.
Talk to your doctor about it.
Addiction to methadone can be viewed as a disease that attacks the central nervous system, and common symptoms include gastrointestinal distress ...

I started methadone maintenance treatment 2 weeks ago. Since I started I feel a million times better and dont have the urge to shoot up all day and night. I have been prescribed clonazepam at 0.5 mg's once a day for the last 3 months and sometimes 1.0mg a day if my anxiety was real bad (used 1.0mg a day maybe 9 times the last 3 months). My question is about stopping clonazepam. I asked my doctor about stopping the clonazepam the other day and he said I could. I stopped cold turkey yeterday and today is day #2 with no clonazepam. I feel a bit anxious and a bit shakey but I was wondering if the methadone will help with the withdrawal from the clonazepam. It's my second day clonazepam free and was wondering 1) If the worst part of the withdrawal is over 2) will the methadone help with the clonazepam withdrawal 3) how long until I get over the withdrawal effects. I know 0.5 mg a day is not high but its enough for me to feel withdrawal somewhat. Thanks ahead of time for your answers
First of all your doctor is a grade a idiot.Regardless of whether u r taking methadone or not u should never stop taking any benzodiazepine instantly. The dose u have been taking and the length of time (3 months) is plenty long enough that you will 2 some degree suffer withdrawals.
You should ALWAYS TAPER DOWN SLOWLY OVER A PERIOD OF MONTHS.otherwise it is possible 2 suffer extreme withdrawals which can be extremely nasty.
the anxiety your feeling is perfectly normal as wil be insomnia from cutting out clonazepam.
Methadone will reduce these symptoms a little and well done you for starting this course of treatment.
as for the anxiety and withdrawals from stopping clonazepam these might reduce and stop in a matter of weeks or linger for a couple of months,,it depends on the person.
It will get better trust me you just have to give it time.
best of luck

Methadone is often given to heroin addicts (methadone maintenance treatment) to reduce or completely eliminate heroin addiction and cravings. Usually it works. Problem is, the users often end up addicted to methadone, and, with severe withdrawal symptoms, usually STAY addicted to methadone. I want to know why it is better to be addicted to methadone than heroin.
"whatever works for you dude!" - Congratulations! You've just given the most pointless answer in the history of this website.
The purity and amount of methadone is controlled. Therefore, the risk of accidental overdose is minimal at best. With heroin, the purity and type of heroin varies based on the source (such as brown heroin, white China, and black tar). Also, there is the possibility that impurities might be introduced into the heroin that can damage the blood vessels or the body. But regardless of the impurities, the heroin addict will eventually damage his blood vessels from injecting the heroin.
Another benefit to methadone is the greatly reduced risk of contracting diseases from sharing needles (HIV and Hepatitis C specifically).
Heroin is illegal. Therefore, the user runs the risk of felony convictions for possession and purchasing it. With methadone, this problem is removed.
Lastly, heroin addiction is an extremely expensive habit. Most users have to resort to prostitution, pimping, selling, trafficking, and theft in order to earn enough money to purchase the heroin. In contrast, quite frequently, methadone users are able to work normal jobs and somewhat assimilate into society.
After being addicted to oxys for just over a year ( oxycontin and oxycodone IR's). Usually 80-120 mg x day throug the nose I quit last week and have been sober a week tonight. I went to the doctor and got started on methadone 5mg 3 x a day, which seemed low but i didn't argue. Im a 24 year old male by the way. I go tomorrow for a check up and so my question is how long do people usually stay on methadone because they acted like my oxy dose wasn't that high and it wouldn't take long on the methadones. but i've really been hurting and the methadone doesn't get me high at all i don't even really feel it but it helps. So my question is how long dose methadone treatment usually last and what can i say to get them to raise the dose without them thinking i just want to get high cause i just want the craving to go away for the oxys. any advice or help is much appreciated thanks !
Well I work around addicts everyday and you actually sound like a lot of them. Where I work, our doctors put the clients on blind tapers, Im not sure if thats what going on where you are but that is what we do. The docs rarely ever change the dosage, they just prescribe non-narcotic/non-addictive medications to help them with the withdrawl symptoms. If theyre tapering you, they may be doing it by 5mg per day. Some of our clients start out on 25mg of methadone then taper down by 5mg a day. But we of course dont tell them this because if they knew how much they were getting they would argue and leave against medical advice or compare with other clients in detox and constantly try to manipulate our doctors and us nurses. They probably wont raise your dose, just and FYI because they you will seem drug seeking. Which isnt what youre looking to do I hope. You should maybe ask the doc about putting you on some non addictive meds to help you cope with the withdrawl. Its good youre trying to get off of them, but I hope you have a support system, you may need it, or you will wind up right back where you were. Be smart about things though and dont get caught up in a methadone clinic, youll never leave, they never do. I hope I may have helped some! If not maybe you should consider rehab. Youve already admitted to having the problem, how about starting a life without the problem? :) Good Luck!

I was hoping that somebody would be able to lend me some advice. I have been on and off pain medication for 8 years, having broke my leg badly playing college football and suffering severe chronic osteoarthritis in my knee. I have not been on them for 8 straight years. I would have two years off here and there before it would start acting up again to the point where I could not function like a normal person. My doctor finally put me on to Pain Management. My doses were increased substantially. I was put on Roxicodone - 15 mg Dose 6 X Day = 90 mg of Oxycodone . This is the program I have been on for the past 8 months. I was going to say screw it and just go through the withdrawal as I have in the past. However I was never on this high of a dose. I have been on this current dose for 8 months now. I have a new job and can not miss work because I am "sick" from coming off the medication. Once, about a month ago, I went 24 hours without a dose and I became fairly ill - cold/flu symptoms,...
