I am having a hard time keeping the weight off lately. Is it possible that the methadone I've been taking for 2 years would suddenly start making me gain weight? I haven't changed eating habits nor have I changed my exercise routine. Thanks for any help.
Good for you for being off heroin. I guess I should have mentioned that I am taking the methadone for pain relief.
It can cause weight gain if you stick to it - mostly because you stop spending all your food money on heroin.
Edit: Sorry if I misjudged you. No offence intended. However having known so many addicts over the years and having listened to their stories about how they'll quit next week (and my own) I've run out of patience with listening to them. If you're taking it for medical reasons then that's a different case.
Trying to get off this stuff! Need advice on some things!

Wow, I know excatly what you are going thru. I have been on methadone for 6 years and talk about weight gain. whew!!! When I first started taking methadone I weighed 140lbs. I now weigh 280lbs. CAn you believe it??I have'nt even tried to loose the weight. I hate the way I look. I hate to even go outside for fearing someone will see me because I get so sick of hearing "Darlene, is that you??" Or wow your getting bigggggg!! I have been on methadone maintenance for over 3 years & my doctor said I was going to gain weight when I started taking it. I was told when I stop taking it, I will lose weight naturally. Is this true?
You do have the answer from your Dr. The Dr has more info then you have provided us so do not worry. But try this while you are taking Methadone, but ask the Dr. I think he will agree with it.

Must drink 1 gallon of water per day.
Eat right, include all food groups per this site above. Do not exceed the total calories per day and eat at least 1500 calories per day every day.
You must sleep up to 8 to 10 hours a day time permitting and including naps.
Go for a walk every day for 1 hour,around your residence, start slowly(5 minute), to warm up then increase the speed a little till you can maintain a good clip then slow down to cool off (5 minute before the end of 1 hour). Do the walking in one direction for about 30 minutes then return home, may take little longer.
Or look up total body weight free free hand exercises and do them for 1 hour every day. You find them in the library and on the Internet. They can be done at home does not need gym.
Methadone stays in your system awhile, it stays in your fatty tissues.
i am on 120 mg but i have never gained weight on this until after i had my baby ...so i am trying to figure out why i am gaining so much weight...
I did ask the doctor about it, but he said the weight gain was more likely to the birth control, my age, and metabolism. The health isn't affecting my physical health, it's just not good for myself esteem. I am used to being little.
Cyndie, you are right, chronic pain does slow me down. It's so hard to get any exercise.
I can't stop taking the methadone, because it has been a wonder drug for me. Even since I have started taking it, I am able to make it through work without breakthrough meds, until about 5pm. For me, that's wonderful! I guess I just need to be thankful to get through 1/2 the day pain free.
