I've been on methadone for about 4 years for a medical condition. I know my condition has nothing to do with my dental problems but I was wondering if the methadone does. I brush my teeth well and floss but I've had 4 teeth in the last 2 years break off. Everything I search online is not definitive so I was wondering if anyone else has had a problem with methadone and tooth decay.
P.S. Please no smartass remarks, although I'm sure I'll get more of those then helpful ones.
Yes indirectly it can. It can begin to affect the way in which saliva forms in your mouth, to the point where your salivary glands essentially dry up. Without saliva, bacteria may begin to form on your teeth, as this bodily fluid does have certain antibacterial compounds. Over time, these bacteria will result in tooth decay
To protect your teeth, follow the dental routine recommended for everyone: brush and floss every day, rinse your mouth with mouthwash, go to the dentist at least twice a year, and cut sugar from your diet. Drinking plenty of water can also help to relieve dry mouth.
So add sugar free gum to your brushing and flossing. And a good mixed diet with foods containing calcium. Get some sunlight for vitamin D production (needed for the absorption of calcium)
Let's talk about the urban legend and myths of methadone. Methadone more than the medication we used carries so many myths and urban legends ...
One of my friends took some thing called Methadone, well when he went to sleep, he started making noises constantly in his sleep, it was really wierd. Like a chattering of his throat, and his teeth, he told me in this morning that his mouth was dry of saliva, and his teeth really hurt.. Is there any connection? What was making him make a noise?
Methadone does decrease saliva and can give you a dry mouth. Although many who have been around people who have overdosed from Methadone have reported a loud snoring an attempt to arouse the person should be made before you panic. The person may snore anyway and the decreased saliva makes it louder. However, iof he took Methadone that was not prescribed to him or mixed it with another drug like Xanax he is playing with fire. What you heard may very well have been a precursor to an overdose and you should talk to him.
I have been taking methadone for pain for a few years and my teeth are brittle, breaking and the enamel is coming off.
I had back surgery and been on pain management for 3 years, I believe meth mouth is caused by methamphetamine not methadone
I read it happens with medications that cause dry mouth or changes in saliva. Methadone and other opiates decrease your muscle mass so maybe it takes from your calcium too. Opiates do obsurb in the bone that is why body pain is so bad during with drawl
friend as been taking methadone for several years due to chronic pain due to a car accident. Taking no other medications and is nervous because she is having several teeth extracted under the care of a maxofacial surgeon and will be put under light general or sedation for the procedure. All her doctors are aware of what medications she is taking but hopes no need to share with this one time specialist. Thank you for your caring response.
Due to the fatal interactions Methadone can have with some medications (many which are used in anesthesia) she needs to tell the dentist about it. I understand the hesitancy because of the stigma associated with it and the fact that some doctors underprescribe pain meds after a procedure when someone is on Methadone but her life is at stake so she needs to mention it.
I am going to a clinic and taking methadone to kick an opiate addiction.
nope. I have taken it for pain for years and it has not caused any problems for me.
Suboxone Forum; Buprenorphine for opioid dependence - View topic ...
Hello, I'm new to this forum. I've been reading alot of posts but haven't seen a answer to my question. I crossed over to Suboxone for one week and was still having a very rough time so I went back to my Norco for 3 days. Can anyone tell me how long I need to wait in hours before I go back on the Suboxone. I'm a cronic pain patiet who has never taken the meds for a high. But I'm taking way too much because of tolerance so that is why I'm crossing over to Suboxone. tenntod - Welcome to the forum and I'm sorry for your troubles. I am not a chronic pain patient, so I can't relate well to what you're going through. However, all of us here for one reason or another have decided that opiates are not working well in our lives anymore. I'm assuming you fit into that category because you started on Suboxone. In order for it to work, I think it is extremely important that you first I'm not a doctor and only have 5 months of Sub use under my belt thus far but I know this stuff works! Now...
