Success rate for Methadone?

My husband has decided to go to the methadone clinic, as treatment for an opioid addiction. I'm very skeptical and I am going with him to the first meeting tomorrow but just thought I'd get a little of others thoughts. I've read the fact sheets top to bottom but still have questions. Anyone that's been through this are you still there? If your not still there did you beat the addiction with Methadone? How long did it take? Not what the docs say but really how long?!?! If this really is something that works I'm all for it, but I don't want mine and my husbands time/money waisted at this clinic!

Well the good news is, he'll detox in the peaceful way possible

The bad news is, he'll be dead.

Methadone has this wonderful quality of causing severe side effects including death. Reasons for this include the high toxicity and almost incapability of combination with other meds. Take the wrong meds, you're dead. Drink a bit of alcohol, you're dead. Doze off at the wrong time, YOU ARE DEAD.

It's like heroin, except just the bad stuff.

Seriously, Worst way to detox... jumping off tall stuff is easier.

Will it work? YES. Is it safe? NO.

The relapse rate is about equal to any other form of detox. The only difference is it will kill cravings and cure pain.

Anyone have a success story about beating painkiller addiction?

I just see so many people's lives totally controlled by pills such as oxycodone, methadone, hydrocodone, etc. and I totally understand how it happens, but I just wanted to hear some success stories of how you or someone you know beat this problem and your thoughts on the subject. Specifically, I'd like to hear how people rehabilitate their brain's reward system back to it's normal function. For instance, after you're on opiates for awhile, eating doesn't give you the good, content, full feeling that it used to.

I used a suboxone regimen for 9 months. I started at 16mg/day and tapered to 4mg/day. The problem was: I couldn't ween below 4mg/day. W/D would kick in 12-16 hours after my last dose, and they are just as bad as oxy W/D. I ditched the subs and starting tapering with oxycodone/oxycontin. Over three months I've tapered from 45-60mg every 2-3 days to 5mg every 3-4 days. For me, weening with the oxy itself seemed to delay the W/D symptoms. Instead of having to take a sub EVERY DAY, I can dose with oxy every 3-4 days. I plan on cutting to 2.5mg/3-5 days within the next week.

What also helped:

OTC Unisom - helped with nausea and sleep

Prescription Bentyl (which was a legitimate scrip from my doctor) - helped with abdominal pain/cramping

OTC Immodium - helped with the firewater that was being discharged

Warm baths - helped with shaking/chills as well as cramping.

Talking with people who are going through the same experience.

Sticking with my normal schedule (going to work, school work [college], playing hockey, going to the gym, etc...), keeping busy and focused on other things, and treating the W/D symptoms like a minor disturbance.

If this information is to be used for your own personal struggle, I wish you luck. Make sure to speak with people who are going through the same thing - but don't dwell (as I said, keep focused on other things). Do your best, have a strong mindset, and things should work to your advantage.

Does anybody know the success rate of going to a regular hospital to get off drugs?

A friend of mine has been going to a methadone clinic for several years. I had heard about people being admitted to a general hospital and being given something to detoxify them, but where do they go from there? Do many people ever get off drugs and stay off?

Very few get off. It's not about hospitals, drugs, doctors, group therapy or any of that BS. It's all about the individual and how bad he/she WANTS to get off. Fewer than 10% get off for good the first time. Many end up dead or in jail. It's really sad when all they have to do is make a decision to rearrange their lifestyle.

ijust started methadone tx for perc/oxy 4 yr major addcition to painkillers n severe depression?

I quit oxys without methadone 3 years ago.
I had to relocate to be able to do it
I also JUST quit smoking...
some of the hardest things Ive had to do ..
but its all for my son ..
My number one reason to get better and to be healthy!

Methadone treatment.. I have suffered from dibilitating pain frm spinal stenosis for 4 years now and I have?

been on Lortab 10's for the duration..it started with taking 2 a day and has gradually built up to 5-6 a day...I still have pain and I feel like lortab has taken over my life even though I know my pain is real..I went to a pain mngmt clinic and he suggested that I take 10 mg methadone..he said I will feel like a normal person again and not have withdrawls from the lortab but the methadone will relieve the pain as well. He said methadone when taken correctly is VERY effective and is a VERY misunderstood drug. I am also having injections to see if they will help. I am already on antidepressants and high blood pressure meds but he said that is ok..Frankly just the name SCARES the hell out of me and I was wondering if anyone has had success with methadone treatment????

Methadone makes people think of heroin addicts...but it is also a very useful pain medication! It is long lasting and effective. It is an opioid, so it can have the same issues with dependence and tolerance that other opioids have, but it is a legitimate pain medication.

It is good that you are being seen in a pain management clinic, because they also have other ways of treating pain. I hope you feel better soon.
