Does anyone know of a woman that took methadone while she was pregnant?

I am currently 12 weeks along and am on medically prescribed methadone. My Doctor tells me this is very safe, however, I'm scared, and would like to hear other womens' stories. (I would truly appreciate those who feel the need to be negative and judgmental, first educate yourself before running your mouth, please) If you have gone thru a similar pregnancy or know of someone who has, or you are in the medical field please respond...Thank you. Sincerely, D.

I have never taken it myself but safefetus.com gives it a B which isn't that bad. (Link: http://safefetus.com/DrugDetail.asp?Drug Id=1143&TradeName=Methadone&Trad eId=2750 ) Here is another website with info: http://www.methadoneandpregnancy.com/man dp.htm

I think the risk of you taking methadone is far less than the risk of taking whatever you are taking it for.

Congrats to you on taking the first steps, many people don't even make it this far, you are very brave and your child will benefit tremendously from this. Good for you!!!

Methadone: Where We Are Part 1

A slightly dated but informative video about Methadone Treatment. This 2 part series was edited for time & content. It covers everything from ...

Have you or anyone you know ever successfully weaned off of methadone? ( long story ahead :) )?

OK.. I was addicted to the painkiller Oxycontin for a couple years. It is an opiate, (which of course I didn't know when I started using it) and is basically just as addicting, or maybe even more addicting than Heroin.

I wasn't a guy who got in accident and was prescribed it or anything. Actually I was a successful drug dealer who had a lot of money to blow on these stupid pain killers which I snorted up my nose. I never wanted to believe I was addicted to this stuff, and actually self detoxed 9 times throughout a 2 year period, always relapsing around the 3 week, 1 month mark, because I couldn't take the depression and boring-ness of normal drug free life. Eventually I decided to change my life around and stop selling drugs. When I started working a normal job, making normal money there was no way I could financially support my PK addiction. So knowing that self detoxing will only result in re-lapse, I checked into a methadone maintenance program.

Best Idea of my life. I also decided to turn my life around, which I KNOW is the real reason I stopped using drugs. I stopped hanging around my gangster friends, moved away from the town I grew up in to a nice spot in the city by the beach. I went back to college and started my own business, which is a local free newspaper. I only hang around friends that don't sell/use drugs and I focus all my time on other pleasures in life such as my girl, business, education and recreational activities.

But I'm still on this Methadone. I have been on for 5 months, and sick of it. I don't need drugs anymore, I have gone back to the part of my great life before drugs and realized this is much better than the last couple years. Now this Methadone is like a ball and chain around my ankle. So a month ago I started reducing my methadone prescription slowly so I can eventually get off it. But I'm scared, I've heard horrible stories how Methadone withdrawal is worse than Heroin (which I have never tried) withdrawal. Has anyone ever successfully used methadone to be completely opiate free?

If you ever have, or know someone that does, can you please tell me and give me some hope, because I am so scared of this withdrawal, and sometimes think I would rather die than do it again. I have gone from 75mg's to 50mg's so far, going down 5mg's a week, and so far no problems.

And if you ever wanna talk or have any questions or comments, my email is mhpatten@yahoo.com

You just have to go slow and if you get sick jump back up for a little while. This will take time and patience. Then when you get off of it don't be afraid to get back on. One big thing is to talk with your doctor or who ever is in charge of your care. There may be other ways to handle withdrawal. It took me two years and I still have rough patches even though I have 4 years of being sober.

my mom is going cold turkey off methadone 79mg i was on 65 and i quit cold turkey need positive support?

she needs positive stories not anyone saying you cant do it or that its dangerous cause im getting off it please help please.

I cant say its gonna be easy i tried doing it at 90 and i couldnt i had to wean myself down slowly ,,,but i have seen it done so there is hope its dangerous but dont let anyone tell you that you cant do it,,,i dont think you are at a high enough level to really hurt you physically other than being sick as hell and tremors,,,,but my friend she quit cold turkey at 60 mgs it took her about 2 weeks to really forget at all about how she felt,,,even then she still had it ruff for a month or so but you will get through it just keep thinkin about how you dont want to be tied to a drug ,,its like having a damn ball and chain around u at all times,,,i hated that as much as it helped me it also limits you on what you can do ,,who you can talk to among other things,,,, if it does get to ruff tho dont give up try to detox slowly like i did,,,but i hope you are able to get it over with now that would be best for you ,,your family ,,and children as well,,,and if you quit cold turkey at 65 you know better than anyone what she needs to do so keep giving her support and you are right she doesnt need to hear a lot of bull about how hard it is ,,,believe me id say she knows that like you said,,,so just keep with the support and days go by faster and faster before long that monkey isnt on your back anymore and you wil be surprised at the things you find joy in that you had lost,,,it wil bring tears to your eyes ,,,i know it sounds sappy and a little homoish,,but im telling you when i got clean my eyes were opened for the first time in ten to twelve years without a haze over them,,,good luck and god bless if you dont believe in god then may a higher power bless you ,,,peace!!!
