My fiance is addicted to pain pills. We have talked about getting her some help from a methadone clinic. I have researched methadone, and from what I am seeing, some people use methadone for pain relief, and some people have even gotten addicted to it. How is this helping a person who is trying to get off pain pills, if their taking something that they could also get addicted to?
My father was put on methodone in an effort to "wean" him off of oxycontin. He got off the oxcyontin but became horribly addicted to the methodone. The next step was to wean him off of the methodone. The substitute they gave him for pain relief did not work, withdrawl from the methodone made him severly depressed. He committed suicide. Please don't let her take methodone.

From my research it seems that Suboxone is safer, fits into your life better (no standing in line at 5am) and does not have the severe withdrawals that methadone users experience. I would like some real life answers..it is to get off of the roller coaster of pain pill addiction. How expensive is Suboxone w/o insurance?
sub is "easier' to get, meaning you only need to see a doctor once a month to get it instead of going to a clinic daily.
However, they are both super long lasting opiates and both produce severe and very long lasting withdrawals once you try to discontinue them.
Most sub doctors are charging about $200 per office visit (for a 10 minute visit just to write a script) and the pills cost about $7 for an 8mg tablet at a pharmacy.
Getting off pain pills is a 30 day roller coaster ride, and getting off sub or methadone is a 2 year roller coaster ride...a very bumpy ride that most can't tolerate.
You also will have all the same side effects on sub or methadone you have on pain pills, plus usually some new ones.
I would strongly recommend you look at other options. I went the sub route after being filled with lies from doctors about how great it is, and it robbed me of 5 years of my life.
If i had to do it all over again, I would go inpatient to detox for 30 days, or less, and be done with it. No one ever wants to go inpatient and be away from their family and loved ones for that long, but compared to sub or meth, 30 days of your life is a breeze.

I am still skeptical about the doses and what side affects I may have from it.
When I first started I got swollen feet w/ water blisters. My doc advised I stay on it to see what happened. (lasix also) It's fine now. But I tend to get twitchy and blurry vision in the evenings and when I'm really tired I hallucinate! It's not scary stuff thank god!! Please HELP! It works WONDERS for the pain and I'm happier mentally more than I've been in a long time! No rude answers please.
Hi.
Methadone is chemically very similar to other opiates, which is why it can be prescribed (and very effective) for pain.
To be honest, your symptoms sound a great deal like hypoglycemia. Are you diabetic by any chance? Are you eating regularly?
However intelligent and well meaning this community is, it is not replacement for professional advice. It seems perfectly reasonable for you to be concerned about these effects. Consult your physician asap. And remember - you are entitled to a second opinion if you are in doubt.
Good luck!

The Elephant in the Living Room: Make Television Work for Your Kids
At last, a book that helps involved parents make informed and thoughtful decisions about the ubiquitous TV. It’s hard to believe that it’s taken so long for this type of book to be written, but what a reflief that it finally has. As the father of a lively 6 year old boy, I’ve yet to come across a book related to parenting that is so readable while being interesting, relevant to day-to-day life, and genuinely useful. It’s changed the way I think about TV, and I suspect it will actually improve that life of our family over the long haul (no small claim).
I picked this book up already convinced that t.v. is basically the worst thing that ever happened to society, so I was skeptical to say the least. However, as the authors state, their intent is to admit that t.v. is here to stay, and for the overwhelming majority, getting totally rid of it would not be an option, and offer guidance in how to make watching it as beneficial as possible.
What this amounts to, it seems, is telling readers that your children under 7 are basically confined to ‘Sesame Street’, ‘Mister Rodger’s Neighborhood’, ‘Blues Clues’, and nature shows on Discovery channel. I found their assessment of Sesame Street a little over the top in their praise of its supposed benefits, though later on in the book they admit that merchandising has begun to compromise the integrity of the show and its imitators. The fact is, there are a number of major studies that have directly challenged the ability of shows like Sesame Street to produce real-life results in reading and mathematics, and much of the research the authors cite as supportive of the show was done or funded by the creators of the show themselves, a definite conflict of interest when funding is on the line.
