Methadone Related Deaths

My dad died of cardiac arrest related to an accidental drug overdose and I really need to know why and how?

My dad died yesterday afternoon. I found him slumped over on his side, laying in bed. When I found him I tried to perform CPR (I'm a nursing student......I SHOULD know this). But instead I panicked and I know I didnt perform the procedure correctly. I know these moments were crucial and I know I failed him. But I digress...

He had been taking, to my knowledge, methadone/oxycontin/xanax/prozac...as far as I know. He suffered from COPD and emphysema (according to the coroner, "bolus emphysema" which I am not familiar with).. the coroner also told me that he had cor pulmonale (right sided heart failure?). My mother was not aware of this..neither was his doctor...nobody was. I suspected it because of various signs and symptoms I had learned about in nursing school. My mother told me that the doctor had just "checked his heart" and that she said his circulation etc was great.....but I just dont understand, if a person has advanced COPD it seems as if any issue with the lungs would probably be an issue with the heart as well?? At least I feel this way.

Anyways. The coroner told me the cause of death was "accidental drug overdose (related to the methadone and xanax", compounded by the bolus emphysema and cor pulmonale. After my unsuccessful attempt at CPR the paramedics came and took his body into the living room....his eyes were wide open....bright blue. The paramedics attempted a breathing tube (I think) and atropine. One paramedic suggested epi and the other refused; they were almost arguing. It seems as if the epi would have been most effective...as far as my limited knowledge is concerned. He went into V Fib at a point, then I heard a paramedic say "its asystole". I remember studying for tests and remembering it was the worst because "if your v fib your v f**ked"........so this was unsettling to hear and even more unsettling when I heard asystole. I know what that is. That means nada, nothing, gone.... I could tell he was in V fib looking at the EKG as they were placing tubes down his throat and IVs into his arm for the atropine. I knew he was dead because I was staring at the EKG the entire time almost and saw the progression into asystole. I looked at the paramedic and said, I know what that means....that means he is dead. To which they said "I cant answer that question ma'am...we'll do whatever we can".....

Because the coroner described his cause of death as "accidental overdose"...I really want to know exactly how this accidental overdose killed my father and how it relates to the cor pulmonale and the bolus emphysema...copd etc. Did the methadone and xanax cause his respirations to decrease, becoming nearly absent and THEN he went into v fib and ultimately asystole...or did the dysrhythmias cause him to stop breathing and then he died? Right when I found him I grabed my stethoscope and he had no heartbeat and his chest was not rising, no peripheral pulses either... could the proper administration of CPR by myself perhaps have saved his life? By the time I found him was he breathing and I simply made an error?

Basically as the old saying, the chicken or the egg....which came first, the vfib/asystole or the absence of breathing?

Is it strange to anyone else that his GP said only weeks ago his "heart was perfectly normal"?

Do you think maybe this wasnt methadone/xanax related (he was prescribed and had the most atrocious spinal problems you could ever imagine...his pain was great and the meds were taken as prescribed)......plus the coroner has not performed any blood tests..all he knows is that I told him my dad was prescribed to these medicines. Is he making a snap judgement?

Also, the days leading up to his death he was lethargic, disoriented, and in a stupor. He was acting strange...talking about his death.. when I found him he was covered in sweat. The bed was wet. When only moments before he had been fine.. could these preceding days have been a sign? He was saying strange things and would cry for no reason. He told me the night before he died that he would die soon... we got into a huge fight. I screamed at him a mere 20 minutes before I found him dead..the last thing I said to him was "I hate you. I cant wait to get out of this house so I never have to see you again. Your a miserable excuse for a human being".

God help me... I severely messed up.

Someone give me closure, please.

Do not feel bad......... Well it is true that he probably had a heart attack or maybe stroke.I knoW it sounds silly but I Want to be a doctor. What happened Was idk sorry.
You did not make an error.

Does anyone know of anything helpful to help soothe a kicking heroin addict?

My daughter is currently taking Methadone to get off of heroin. She has been using, off and on, but mostly on...for about 5 years. This isn't her first detox. In fact, it is about her fifth time detoxing. Each time, she returns to the drug, usually within the first month. I am just wondering if anyone out there has found anything to assist in keeping a heroin addict from returning to the drug. Once the detox is finished, and she isn't using, and isn't sick, she seems so happy! She claims to hate the drug. But all it takes is just one person who is using to come around...and there she goes again. And I've discovered that for her, anyway, using just once is one time too many. If she slips once, she won't stop until she is fully hooked again. I'm afraid she will die. She has lost several friends to overdose, and other heroin related causes of death. Please help.

I battled drug and alcohol addiction. Not heroin, but addictions nonetheless. I knew that the only way I was going to get off the merry-go-round was to remove myself from everything and everyone I knew. I chose to go commercial fishing in Alaska. I was at sea for 6-8 weeks at a time and the only time we docked, it was to offload and use the phone at the end of the dock. That's all the further away I got from the boat. Airfare, room, board, all company-paid. I stayed up for 8 mos, amassing a nice, big bank account. When I got home, I couldn't easily adapt to being back on land so left again 5 weeks later. A new addiction, fishing. And I never picked up the old ones again. How this can help your daughter is: she gains new perspective, opens her life to alternate ways of living, she'll work herself to exhaustion, she'll earn a great deal of money and she will be on a "dry boat". No booze, no drugs, period.

It really, really worked for me. I made different friends and met the man I would marry (these 15 years later, we are still).

Once she understands that her destiny can be shifted by different decisions she makes, perhaps she'll be willing to harness her own power to move into her own future. Her methadone is as much a crutch as her heroin was, though, admittedly, a better crutch. At the end of the day though, a crutch is still the thing we lean on when we either cannot or will not walk on our own two feet.

As a mother, I ache for you. And I wish you all the peace and luck with your daughter.

What is Chloral Hydrate and how did it relate to Anna Nicole's death?

I saw on the news that Anna Nicole took 2 tsp of Chloral Hydrate which may have been too much and mixed with the methadone, valium and something about her being ill from meat contamination which ultimately caused her death. Help?

Chloral hydrate, also known as trichloroacetaldehyde monohydrate, 2,2,2-trichloro-1,1-ethanediol, and under the tradenames Aquachloral, Novo-Chlorhydrate, Somnos, Noctec, and Somnote, is a sedative and hypnotic drug as well as a chemical reagent and precursor. Its chemical formula is C2HCl3O · H2O.

Methadone is a synthetic opioid, used medically as an analgesic and in the treatment of narcotic addiction. It was developed in Germany in 1937, and in the USA was first brought to market by the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly and Company.

Diazepam (IPA: [daɪˈæzəˌpæm]), marketed under brand names Valium, Stesolid, Diazemuls, Seduxen, Bosaurin, Diapam, Antenex, Ducene and Apozepam)[1] is a drug which is a benzodiazepine derivative. It possesses anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, sedative, skeletal muscle relaxant and amnestic properties. This makes it a useful drug for treating anxiety, insomnia, seizures, alcohol withdrawal, and muscle spasms. It is also used before certain medical procedures (such as endoscopies) to reduce tension and anxiety, and in some surgical procedures to induce amnesia.[2][3]

Diazepam is a core medicine in the World Health Organization's "Essential Drugs List", which is a list of minimum medical needs for a basic health care system.[4] Diazepam is used to treat a wide range of conditions and is one of the most frequently prescribed benzodiazepines.

D: I'm only ten years old and I can see that there is something wrong here. Is the Goverment TAXING YOU ON THE GOOD DRUS Dad.
Me: Yes

as seen from the mind of a ten year old.

As cigarettes are legal and cannabis is less dangerous there is no reason not to legalise it. Consider the experience of the Netherlands where small quantities are decriminalised. There is no more of a "drug problem" there than anywhere else and also no convincing evidence whatsoever for the "gateway theory" that it leads on to more dangerous drugs. Nor is it addictive in the way that tobacco is - I speak from experience of both as a moderately frequent visitor to Amsterdam who always enjoys a visit to a coffeeshop for a "koffie" and a nice spliff.

Nice article and totally proves the point - "out of the mouths of babes and sucklings..." as they say (originally from Psalm 8:2).

  • Supervision of Methadone Prescriptions Reduces Number of Related ...

Although the heroin substitute is known to effectively reduce heroin-related deaths among heroin addicts and facilitate better recovery during rehabilitation, use of methadone itself has raised concerns due to its potential for abuse, dependency, and overdose when misused by vulnerable patients. Because trends in heroin abuse and methadone prescribing among the UK population have continued to rise in recent years, Professor John Strang at the National Addiction Centre, Institute of Psychiatry in King’s College London and colleagues assessed the relationships between methadone-related deaths and the use of supervised methadone prescribing among the Scottish and English populations during 1993 to 2008.

In their study, the researchers gathered information regarding those deaths in Scotland and England in which methadone was the sole drug involved or was used in combination with other substances. The researchers polled their results based on the number of methadone-related deaths per million daily doses of methadone per year, composing what they call an annual OD4-methadone index. According to their research, the practice of methadone prescribing dramatically changed during the 1990s as the introduction of daily supervision of methadone doses within the early stages of treatment became standard among treatment facilities. Because of this increased supervision, the researchers noticed that methadone-related deaths had dropped four times the rate from previous years in both Scotland and England, indicating that the newer method of methadone administration was not only effective but safer to use in recovery treatment.
