My father, age 58 is trying to kick methadone. He started taking percosets (illegally) and did so for about 2 years. Then he wanted to kick percs and a 'friend' gave him methadone. He only did it for 6 months and was only at the most doing 20mg per day. It was only to feel "normal" from not taking percs anymore. He seriously didnt know how bad methadone was when he started it. He is currently detoxing at home, with help from me and mom. This is the 3rd day without. He was much worse yesterday, seemed better today with help of xanax and a little pot. My dad never ever was into drugs and he sadly kind of fell into this. He is VERY concerned that he's going to get worse before he gets better because that is what so many internet articles are saying. We're thinking MAYBE it wont be as bad due to the short duration and the low dose. Any idea how long this all could take until he starts feeling better? Any hopeful encouraging words to offer for him?
Thanks to the advice from those who responded. I'm really amazed how well he's doing. I just saw him a few minutes ago. He's tired, not really eating much, and very moody, swings back and forth between happy and depressed. He's also very weepy at times and Ive never seen him so loving towards my mother...he just keeps hugging her and saying how glad he is that she's there. He's really doing MUCH better than a few days ago. He's still worried about the recovery duration because he's jumping of 20mg's to NOTHING, but he's doing it w/o the crutch of another drug and I'm really proud of him!! He's gonna make it and if you're dealing with the same thing, YOU WILL TOO! Dont trade one addiction for another. If you're on smack, quit the smack w/o meth! If you're on meth, taper down and then quit w/o suboxone or something else you'll get hooked to. Smoke weed, look up natural remedies, have family or friend support, butch up and just DO IT! Big Pharma just wants you hooked! Thanks again.
And yes, he's taking xanax to help so I guess its a bit of a crutch, but to be honest, the guy probably needs it anyway even if he wasnt fighting addiction. He's pretty high strung.
I hope your family gets through this hard time,I personally am on methadone due to a vicodin addiction,I was addicted to vicodin for 3 years and I got them from my Dr. due to severe migraines, when the migraines stopped I felt good taking the vikes,so I continued to lie telling the Dr's that I still had them,I got scared because I had 2 children and wanted to stop and when I tried to I was SO MISERABLE!!A friend of mine was taking methadone and offered me a little,so I took it,over the next 3 days I felt no desire for the vicodin and to me that was huge,so I did my own research and got help,I have been on methadone for 4 years now and I can honestly say that it saved my life, without it I don't know where I'd be,I do know that it is extremely hard to kick,I don't know when or if i can ever get off,I am on 130mgs a day so I'm sure your dad won't have too much longer to go before he gets better,it does stay in your system much longer than any pills so he could feel the effects for up to 3 weeks, but just keep supporting him like you're doing now and I'm sure he'll do OK.I know this might not answer your question but I do know what it's like to have the addiction to both and wanted to tell you that if you need someone to talk to or ask any questions feel free to email me any time,I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers, you are a wonderful person and I hope you get through this soon. (((HUG)))

Be honest. And ask them to be honest with you if things do work out. Employers what a good days work, and employees that get along with everyone. They want someone who works hard and works together. If you're doing that then there is no issue. Keep going to your therapy and work out the issues in your life. People usually don't have a drug or alcohol problem, they have a pain problem. Make sure you're dealing with the pain in your life. If things don't work out and you need to part ways, do it graciously and go get another job. There are millions of jobs out there and opportunity unfolds in the strangest places for those who are prepared. Good Luck.

Is the methadone part of your recovery? Because they should wean you off of it, if so... If you're just using methadone, try going to a clinic.. they'll help you wean off of it. Good luck!!!
I'm still smoking a bit of rock cause I can't handle the fatigue. Will this delay my physical recovery from methadone and heroin?
I don't know anything about any of these three drugs, but I'm guessing that rock isn't the best thing, you are just exchanging one habit for another. I'm sure the amount of time that it will take for you to go through withdrawls depends on how much you did and how bad your habit was. Just think, once you get through all this stuff how good you will feel.

I’m sure Ted has the world’s best intentions, but he also has an evil little monkey on his back. Frankly the odds are stacked against him but the epic battle that is ahead can be won by either side, and so I tip my hat to this lucky man and wish him the best as he heads into battle. A family’s honor and a man’s life is at stake. The world patiently waits to see who will rise from the ashes. And may I say…. let that evil little monkey rot in hell. I’m pulling for Ted all the way.
