Number 1 - Don't stop taking it,
Then chat to the doc.
My cousin was on methadone with one of her kids and he's a beautiful little boy. I'm sure you're daughter will need extra trips to the doc but it can work out fine.

Withdraw is the most common which would be at birth. It can be very minor or severe depending on the mother and baby and varies from family to family. I was on Methadone when i had my 8 year old and she had very minor withdraw from it all she had was sneezing and she did not like the breast at all which is recommended because the breast milk provides enough to ween the baby slowly instead of having a sudden stop of the meds. I was on 30mg's when she was born and i can say she is a smart cookie now and has no problem learning and no signs of any problems at all. i have been clean from everything, even methadone for 8 years now and know that methadone is not the best thing in the world but it is much better than doing street drugs because it is regulated and monitored. I also have a friend that was on 150 mg and her baby was in the NICU for 6 weeks, he was the biggest boy in there and was put on meds for the detox she had a hell of a time but was also on a high dose at that time! If you are on Methadone, do not worry just make it a reason to get clean and never use again after you have the baby. There are alos high risk doctors who will not judge you and work directly with methadone pregnancies. Good Luck!!!

First of all it is not me that is pregnant but my question is my freind is 7 weeks pregnant and she had been on 10mg of methadone a day due to back pain but is not prescribed by a physician. Do you think that her baby will be ok? If she tells her mid-wife that she is dependent on this will she tell authorities or not? I dont know much about the withdrawal of this or the side effects during pregnancy so should she reduce the doses until she is off of it or should she go cold turkey? Thanks in advance
Methadone will not 'kill' her baby. I have worked in a methadone treatment facility for 10 years and seen lots of happy healthy babies born to mother's who were prescribed methadone. What can 'kill' the baby is the withdrawals. Anything mom goes through the baby will go through. Withdrawals from any opiate (including methadone) is very serious. She should not stop taking the methadone, but she should tell her midwife so she can get help from a facility that is licensed to prescribe methadone. If she is not using a doctor she is 'buying it on the street' which is a huge issue. You never know for sure what or how much much you are really buying. People like to water down (the liquid form of methadone) and she and the baby could go into withdrawal. 10mg methadone is such a small amount I wonder if that part of the information is correct? 10mg would not help with back pain, but you could become physically dependent on that amount. I have seen babies born whose mom's were on anything from 30-150mg and they were and are just fine (mentally, emotionally, and physically). If she does not get the methadone prescribed legally before she gives birth she (and the baby) could end up in serious trouble. For one thing the baby may go through neonatal abstinance syndrome (withdrawals) after birth and need medical treatment (the hospitals know how to withdrawal babies comfortably). The other issue is if medical personnel suspect the baby is in withdrawal they will drug test him or her at birth and if they are positive for methadone without the mother being prescribed the methadone by a doctor she will be at risk for having social services step in and remove the baby pending an investigation. If her doctor or midwife and hospital personnel know ahead of time, they will be prepared to give the baby something to keep them comfortable and help with any withdrawal symptoms. Tell her it is best to get help now so she can have a healthy baby.

THEY DO NOT GIVE OUT METHADONE FOR AN UNPLANNED PREGNANCY.
I am currently 6 months pregnant and taking methadone i am curious if the amount of methadone i am currently taken will affect the severity of withdrawls for my baby when she is born i am currently on 45 mgs of methadone but have been told that i should be at a higher dose for the baby is this true?
Obviously the dose given determines the severity of withdrawal symptoms if they occur.
Your dose is lower than most pregnant women, but the dosage required varies and is based on whether you are experiencing cravings or withdrawal. As your pregnancy progresses, you may need a higher dose because of the increase in blood volume as you and the baby grow. Let your doctor know if you are symptomatic.
Undergoing methadone treatment while pregnant will not cause birth defects for your baby, but some infants may go through withdrawal after birth. Generally for withdrawal to be seen in an infant, the mother's dose is usually greater than 80mg/day. Withdrawal does not mean the baby is addicted. Studies have shown that your dose of medication has no bearing on whether or not your baby experiences withdrawal. Infant withdrawal usually begins a few days after your baby is born but may begin two to four weeks after birth.
Withdrawal symptoms may last several weeks and commonly include:
Fussiness/restlessness
Not eating or sleeping well
Fever
Vomiting
Trembling
Many times a quiet, comfortable environment is enough to provide comfort to your baby. If the symptoms are severe, your baby’s doctor may prescribe medicine to help. The doctor also may be able to provide information and support to you on how to make your baby more comfortable without medicine. Once your baby is born, never give methadone or any other medication to your baby without your doctor’s approval. Even a small amount can be enough to seriously harm or even kill your baby. Let your doctor manage the baby’s withdrawal.
The good news is that babies born to mothers on methadone do as well as other babies. While it is not known for certain what long-term effects the exposure to methadone may have on babies, their health is much better than babies born to mothers on heroin.
I hope this helps.

Pregnant Inmate Wants Suboxone Not Methadone
Pregnant inmate Ashley Michelle Sligh says that the methadone treatment provided by the Duval County (FL) jail will cause harm to her unborn child. She wants to be released early so that she can switch from methadone to buprenorphine.
Medical experts have long recommended methadone treatment for pregnant women who are opiate dependent. But a new study funded by the National Institutes of Health and recently published in the
“Methadone, which is the standard of care, works fine, but buprenorphine works better,” says study co-author Dr. Peter Martin of the Vanderbilt Addiction Center in Nashville, TN.
Researchers found that babies born to mothers treated with buprenorphine during pregnancy had an average hospital stay upon birth of 10 days versus 18 days for babies born to mothers treated with methadone.
Babies born to mothers treated with buprenorphine also needed less morphine to treat withdrawal symptoms. Babies of mothers treated with methadone needed an average of 10 milligrams of morphine versus 1 milligram of morphine for babies of mothers treated with buprenorphine.
