Methadone Overdose Treatment

How many people have to die from a methadone treatment program before the government funded center admits faul

t? My son went in for pain management and within one week he was dead. On that particular weekend, that hospital had 5 methadone overdoses. He was 23 yrs. young.

I am so sorry for your drastic loss!!

That number seem high, so unless it was a fluke, I think methadone might be particularly too casually accepted, overprescribed and misunderstood by the medical community in your area. It's reputation for years had been as almost a wonder drug, a safe(r) alternative to illegal drugs and drug dependency, and that may be a factor.

Methadone danger, however, has become more high profile lately, mainly, I'm sorry to say, because of some high profile victims, but also because the actual statistics are startling enough be become publicized.

There is undoubtedly some degree of fault all along the line. The drug companies, the FDA, the medical community are understandably concerned with covering their own butts. but often, this is totally at the expense of losing even more human lives needlessly.

In more ways than one, probably the best thing you can do now is to become an activist on this issue. Then, your son's life and senseless death
can become truly meaningful and somebody's blessing. Take care of yourself.

Did the methadone clinic overdose me or did the Vicodin?

I know this is a long question PLEASE PLEASE answer I have wanted to know for two years. THANK YOU SO MUCH. My daughter uses Yahoo Answers I made her ask this Q for me.

I was a heavy Vicodin user for ten years. I went from one, twenty, sixty, eighty, and finally to one-hundred-twenty 750 MG pills per day. I tried to quit at each of the numbers listed above in intervals. When I was taking 120 per day I went to a methadone clinic to get help as part of an out-patient program where they put me on maintenance methadone to help me quit. I was doing two weeks of methadone without taking any Vicodin. I followed all the directions and did not misuse the methadone. I do not recall anything during the second week of treatment. However, my friends were still taking me daily to the clinic and had to carry me to get in the car. I don't remember any of it. The methadone clinic kept increasing my dosage and my friends were telling them I was not drinking or eating. My friends were wondering if I needed to be hospitalized and the methadone clinic said no. I ended up slipping into a coma with 100% kidney and liver failure the same night and my family called 911. I was in a coma for thirty days. Do you think the Methadone clinic was at fault? I was NOT doing any Vicodin. So, what made me sick the methadone clinic or coming off of Vicodin???? Had my family been there I would have died that night. How many people are out there dying right now from the same treatment and trying to get sober.
I am two years sober just wondering what happened back in the day

Methadone is a very, very heavy medication and people can react to it in all sorts of ways. It's actually just as addictive and way more dangerous than most of the opiates it helps people come off of! Most people have no idea how strong that stuff is and how dangerous it can be-most people who use it to come off opiates end up addicted to it!
When you're on it, it prevents detox from opiates and so what you experienced wasn't due to withdrawal from vicodin. I would definitely talk to a doctor (not somebody at the clinic) since they probably gave you too much and it put you into the coma state.
My husband used to be addicted to vicodin and heroine, and he's on soboxyn, which is an opiate blocker and latches onto your receptors so you can't get high on other opiates. It has a 36 hour half-life so you don't go through the constant withdrawals like you do on vicodin or methadone, and long-term studies have shown that people have a much higher success rate with soboxyn than any other detox method when paired with therapy. Only certain doctors can prescribe it, so find one in your area and this will definitely help you much more than the methadone!

Does anyone here have any information on buprenorphine as a substance abuse treatment?

I have read some stuff that claim that methadone can be addictive as well. Of course, if the intake is facilitated properly, the chances that one will overdose is slim. But I have recently heard about buprenorphine and I was just wondering about whether this is better than methadone when it comes to the treatment of substance abuse.

It has been stated by the Behavioral Pharmacology Research Unit at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, that just a single injection of buprenorphine is able to block the effects of heroin and relieve heroin craving and withdrawal symptoms for up to 6 weeks. Tests also showed that the formulation of buprenorphine appeared to be safe and well-tolerated, with no side effects or signs of respiratory depression or opioid intoxication. In addition, patients also did not need additional medication for relief from withdrawal. All in all, buprenorphine seems to be an appealing and effective treatment option for heroin and other opioid addicts.

What is the best way to convince a drug addict that it's just not worth it?

It's like they have to hit absolute rock bottom. My bf has stolen from my Mom and others. He lies like crazy. We helped him get into a state funded rehab but it was only 11 days so it was kind of a joke. His drug of choice is Heroin. He has slowed down on using it but if he doesn't have it, he now gets really drunk. He also smokes pot like crazy and does coke when it's around. He's been to jail but only for a night at the most. He's known people (but not well) that have overdosed and seen people almost overdose and have to go to the hospital. He sees how it makes him look and act and how it's affected his personality. We're separated and he's even sleeping with a girl with Hep.C (she admitted it to me when we were friends) and I think using her dying sister's drugs. I want my old bf back. I also am an addict but I am staying away from all these people and am in methadone treatment. I still drink once a week so I am still not clean but I'm alot better. (cont'd)
I know both of our health has been affected greatly. He's only 30 and already bald. My teeth are rotting. I used to be drop dead gorgeous but I look haggard and like I've lead a rough life (I'm only 34). Thank God, we don't have kids! I am not going to leave him or give up on him. He is cheating on me 'cause of the drugs and because I hurt him when I was using heavily and not coming home for days on end. I don't blame him but I think he's punished me enough. He needs to be around me so I can show him how much better you feel sober. Is there such a thing as a "scared straight" program that's free? I mean, maybe if he could see junkies in the streets of the city and how bad they are (he's always had a place to live), see how many end up in the morgue or spend a week in prison, it'd scare him straight! HELP!

I was just thinking to myself this morning while I watched a young girl puffing deeply on a cigarette how glad that I have been smoke free for over two years now. On how many times that I tried to quite smoking and was not able to do it no matter how hard I tried. I was only able to do it when My 22 year old son called me and said that he would quit if I did.
I ended up quiting and he was not able to do it. As you know you just have to find that one thing that makes it worth while to quit and I know that its not easy but as you know it is so worth it. Just keep tiring not matter how many times it takes, you will make it.

Could Someone PLEASE Help Me???!!!?

Okay. Can someone tell me the answer to this, please. The _____ of a drug often varies in different people. I have choices; side effects, overdose, dosage, depressant, action, an antagonistic. I know a few of them are definitely not it, but could someone tell me the answer. Also, is methadone maintenance a treatment for reducing dependence on heroin?? My Health teacher decides to give us worksheets from an old book, so I can't always find the answer. And don't give me any sites to go to either. Way too much hassle. Thank you.

Methadone Addiction Overdose - ADDICTION TREATMENT SEARCH

Because methadone is quite similar to morphine , it helps in reducing heroin withdrawal symptoms in many individuals. For the treatment of pain, many times this drug is used for individuals suffering from cancer or terminal illnesses. Methadone has been available legally since 1947 in the United States but unfortunately now, is considered a drug of abuse. When used as prescribed, there are many benefits to this prescription drug .

Not only is methadone treatment successfully helping many people with heroin addiction and withdrawal symptoms, but people are abusing this narcotic in many ways. The abuse of methadone leads to tolerance, dependency and addiction as well as a methadone overdose for many individuals. Because methadone became so widely prescribed by physicians in the past and the dispensing of this controlled drug wasn't closely monitored, the use and abuse of methadone was responsible for drug related medical emergencies. In 2001, methadone was involved in 10,725 emergency department visits.
