I have been on methadone for over a year now and have gained weight ever since I started taking it. I have never had such a hard time losing weight. Does anyone else relate?
Wow, I know excatly what you are going thru. I have been on methadone for 6 years and talk about weight gain. whew!!! When I first started taking methadone I weighed 140lbs. I now weigh 280lbs. CAn you believe it??I have'nt even tried to loose the weight. I hate the way I look. I hate to even go outside for fearing someone will see me because I get so sick of hearing "Darlene, is that you??" Or wow your getting bigggggg!! I'm going to clinic, and I have found this medication to cause bad side efects. I need to get off this as fast as i can.
One must taper off the drug slowly or face seriously painful withdrawal. I am not sure what sort of bad side effects you are having but they would need to be life threatening to justify cold turkey withdrawal from methadone. Since you are taking it for pain you probably are not on an extremely high dose so a taper would not take too long. Talk to your doctor because you obviously are going to need a replacement medication for pain that he will have to prescribe which begs the question why does he not know about this already? Furthermore, Suboxone is not for pain and MUST be taken after the methadone is out of your system or the same intense withdrawals occur so that is not an option but your doctor can give you something else for pain before your taper is completed and then build you up on the new med. I know many time methadone is used as a last resort in pain management so I am not sure what you have and have not tried. Good Luck.

Do not drink alcohol while you are taking methadone. Dangerous side effects or death can occur when alcohol is combined with methadone. Check your food and medicine labels to be sure these products do not contain alcohol.

it's been over 24hrs since I took a methadone and I have my other pain medicine. How long if I have to do I need to wait to take my other medication?
You should be fine now. The idea is to not overmedicate (you'll be able to tell when you start feeling "high") and to not let yourself come completely off of the medication. I would start taking the pain medication as the doctor instructed you. However this also depends on which pain medication you have, but assuming it's legal and your doctor knew you would be taking methadone, you should have no problems.
I have been taking this med for years. I have a new doc. and the first thing he said was that he was going to take away some of my pain meds because of the low pulse. Should I be looking in other areas for my answer ?
It's a fairly common side-effect but something that should be monitored.
