A little history about me, as well as an update.
I am doing a research paper on mostly state runed facilities/clinic which specialize in methadone treatment, I was just wondering if anyone here has any personal experiences or views on this type of treatment? I am just wondering if I should take on a negative standpoint or a positive....
Methadone is more addictive and harder to kick than heroin. Clinics around here (mostly private) here seem to keep pushing higher methadone doses rather than attempting to get anyone off the stuff. A friend who is on methadone wishes she had just kicked heroin and never started methadone.
My friend is already on methadone maintenance and it's really expensive (105$ a week). I know there are some insurance companies that cover it, but don't know which ones. Also, he has a temporary job, so can't get insurance through his job yet.

The more likely question would be does the clinic accept insurance and if so what kind. Most MMT clinics do not accept insurance and if they do they will tell you which ones.
Methadone is often given to heroin addicts (methadone maintenance treatment) to reduce or completely eliminate heroin addiction and cravings. Usually it works. Problem is, the users often end up addicted to methadone, and, with severe withdrawal symptoms, usually STAY addicted to methadone. I want to know why it is better to be addicted to methadone than heroin.

The purity and amount of methadone is controlled. Therefore, the risk of accidental overdose is minimal at best. With heroin, the purity and type of heroin varies based on the source (such as brown heroin, white China, and black tar). Also, there is the possibility that impurities might be introduced into the heroin that can damage the blood vessels or the body. But regardless of the impurities, the heroin addict will eventually damage his blood vessels from injecting the heroin.
Another benefit to methadone is the greatly reduced risk of contracting diseases from sharing needles (HIV and Hepatitis C specifically).
Heroin is illegal. Therefore, the user runs the risk of felony convictions for possession and purchasing it. With methadone, this problem is removed.
Lastly, heroin addiction is an extremely expensive habit. Most users have to resort to prostitution, pimping, selling, trafficking, and theft in order to earn enough money to purchase the heroin. In contrast, quite frequently, methadone users are able to work normal jobs and somewhat assimilate into society.
Does the average American see methadone as a valid treatment method for heroin and other opiate addiction?
Oh Steve, thanks for this one. I've always wanted to be an average American. Having worked in the mental health field for a number of years I can tell you that I have seen some great responses to methadone maintenance. Anyone that has seen or been drawn into the world of opiate addictions knows how all encompassing this addiction is. Life's primary focus becomes that next high and avoiding withdrawal at all cost. Many have been able to resume a degree of normalcy in their lives by complying with a methadone program. Granted, a lot of work remains to regain one's life after beginning a methadone program. Like any treatment, it's the work that you put into that gives you the chance to look beyond active addiction. As far as the general population's perception of methadone, who cares? It's your addiction..own it, get treatment for it and be at peace with the fact that you have made the best treatment choice for you.

Fading away: big implications for methadone maintenance treatment
All men on methadone maintenance programmes should be having bone checkups. That’s the conclusion of a paper in the current edition of the journal Addiction. Why? It looks like taking methadone long term for men, but not women, is associated with thinning of the bones potentially leading to increased fracture risk.
Actually we’ve suspected this for a few years with other researchers finding similar things. This paper is different though, for it calls clearly for men on maintenance treatment to undergo “assessment of skeletal health”. Why is that of any interest? Well because in the UK there are around 170,000 people on methadone. Let’s say three quarters are men, meaning 127,000 patients, generally younger chaps, now need to be screened for osteoporosis.
Screening is normally done through asking questions for risk factors and arranging a bone scan. Those found at risk would be recommended to start medication to reduce the risk. Patients would almost certainly need to be directed to their GPs in the first instance for assessment.
