My boyfriend and I have been dating for four years now and he has been addicted to Methadone for 5 years. He thinks it is perfectly safe and that there are no long term affects of this drug. I say a drug is a drug no matter what it is or what doctor says it is safe. I think if you need help or are sick then that's when you should use a drug but you should never abuse a drug.
Methadone is used to help heroin addicts stay off heroin, if he is a recovery heroin addict and the doctor has prescribed him methadone and he talk the prescribed amount he should be fine, methadone has no known serious side effects. However, If he is getting it another way and he was never a heroin addict then I don't know why he would be taking it. People get addicted to meth, take methadone to stop there cravings for meth. Really there is no other reason you would take it.

I am just curious about what a methadone overdose does to your body in the long term?
What I mean is that my brother in law took WAY too much methadone and had no pulse and was not breathing and he is now in ICU and I was curious about what shape he is going to be in now
An "overdose" is usually used to denote DEATH by overdose...never heard of it in any other context...but if you mean what happens if you take too much (of anything, not just methadone) but don't actually die...organ damage throughout the body, i would presume...especially the liver and kidneys whose job it is to filter it out of your body.

i know someone who is on methadone(maintance) and also has hepatitis c, has been offered interferon alfa and ribavirn treatment for this but is'nt sure about the long term effects of methadone use
In a word...yes;
Methadone is a narcotic. When taking narcotics for a long period, a tolerance develops. Tolerance causes a need to increase the dosage to keep the effect.

I have been on 130 mgs of methadone for ten months now. I am constantly constipated and fall asleep easily. But when I don't take it I feel very depressed.
You might try asking your doctor about Buprenorphine. Used for many of the same uses as methadone but maybe wouldn't be as bad with the side effects.
Best of luck to you!
Long Term Methadone Tolerance - Opiophile.org
I've been going to the local clinic for a little over a month now, and my life has greatly improved and I am completely stable at 90 mg! I've not used anything but methadone, since I started. I've been completely clean except for the legal OTC cat's claw and dextromethorphan hydrobromide potentiators. I am a bit weary of the dxm, however, as I've noticed anything over 120 mg makes my breathing more difficult, and a little light headed. The cat's claw works like a dream, now. I also take 30 mg of paroxetine (generic paxil...it's an ssri) which puts a bit of an optimistic glow to the methadone. That's enough about how I've been doing though, and on to my question..... Since I've started, I've talked to two people who have been on methadone long term. One older guy said he has been on it since 1986! He started when I was 1 years old...but I didn't dare ask his dose, for some reason...it just seemed rude. Another was a couple who have been on MMT for 7 years, and stated that they do great on...
