Methadone Drug Addiction .com

My fiance is addicted to pain pills. We have talked about getting her some help from a methadone clinic. I have researched methadone, and from what I am seeing, some people use methadone for pain relief, and some people have even gotten addicted to it. How is this helping a person who is trying to get off pain pills, if their taking something that they could also get addicted to?

My father was put on methodone in an effort to "wean" him off of oxycontin. He got off the oxcyontin but became horribly addicted to the methodone. The next step was to wean him off of the methodone. The substitute they gave him for pain relief did not work, withdrawl from the methodone made him severly depressed. He committed suicide. Please don't let her take methodone.

I take methadone for pain, I've been on it for over five years now. I take 70 mgs a day, plus 120 mgs of morphine for breakthrough pain. What are the long term effects of taking these drugs? And if I'm not getting the relief I used to get, should I ask my doctor to "UP" my dose or should I look for another pain medication?
I've also seen a pain specialist and went to a pain clinic for almost two years. After my third surgery and still in pain there wasn't much more they could do. Even Physical Therapy wasn't giving me any relief. I am at maximum medical benefit, the pain is Chronic.

OK so my sister is on Methadone for chronic back pain. I last saw her a little over 10 years ago and she looked great. I saw her today, she has bad skin, bad teeth, she's fat, and she's not over 40, or maybe a few years older. She looks old, premature aging at it's finest. Can this crap cause this? I don't know what dosage she is on, I just know she looks like hell and I was scared for her and shocked at the same time that my sister looks like this now. I know methadone can lead to bad teeth cause of the saliva thing, and doesn't let nutrients into your gut, but really? She looks OLD. So old.. please help, not with opinions but experience. I am the baby of the family and I don't want to lose my second oldest sister because of a damned pill. She's never done any drug except pot as far as I know, and I keep in touch with her. The rest of us don't age that fast... HELP please gimme some experiences or something.

Your sister, or anybody will look like hell if they have been forced to live with pain for any amount of pain. The kicker is she doesn't have to be living with it or be taking any pain killers to try to cover it up. Back pain is caused by pinched muscles in the back and they can be freed up to get rid of the pain and here's how to do that:
Back:
(do from a sitting position)
Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder, fingers over the back and the palm in the front and firmly press on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side.
For best results relax the body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.

i have been taking percocet for 2yrs and was on methadone for pain relief but it made me sick so they switched me to ms cotin/morphine sulfate cr 15 mg i am just wondering if it is supposed to work right away like percocet or if it takes awhile to work right like methadone

ms contin is a time release medication, and it takes time to build a level in your system.

I am using methadone for pain relief and the last time I went to the dentist I had 9 cavities. I take very good care of my teeth I brush 3 times a day, I floss daily and I would like to know if methadone contributes to tooth decay ?

There is a myth that Methadone rots your teeth but it is just that ...a myth. Methadone in and of itself does not cause tooth decay however some of the common side effects with methadone can lead to decay such as dry mouth (as the previous poster noted), craving sweets (not all people get this but some do and researchers theorize it is related to the "pleasure pathway" relationship with Methadone but they aren't sure), and there has been a link between increased dental care for addicts/pain patients after the Methadone begins to relieve withdrawal or pain (because most of us do not seek dental care when we are in dire pain therefore seeking a dentist after we feel better only to discover we have decay which is from years of neglect but we attribute it to the recent Methadone we are on). There are suggestions many doctors will make to help with this when they prescribe Methadone such as watching sweets and being aware that we may be craving more sweets, chewing sugar free gum for dry mouth will help , additional brushing if you do eat sweets and there is even a version of Methadone called "Vitadone" that claims it has decreased sugar cravings associated with it but I believe this is only for those being treated for addiction.
