Addiction is a disease however it can be controlled. The person using needs to make the decision themselves to stop and get help. You can't make someone stop which is very unfortunate! It takes a lot of counseling as there is underlying issues that they may not even know about. Sometimes it is depression or some sort of trauma like a death or car accident. When the person is in counseling (not all are good and not all work for everyone) the issue can surface and then they need to learn a new way to deal with the feelings. It is not an easy road!
They don't realize how they hurt everyone around them. The disease tells them that it's ok to lie and steal to get what they want. The urge to use again and again is what causes them to do the things they do, it over rides any morals they were raised with.
If you are dealing with someone that is using and they do get into a program - make sure it is longer than 30 days - see if you can find one that uses a course called Seeking Safety which teaches all the skills they will need to stay clean. Do some research and find a good program!
Remember that telling them to stop will not work! I know you'd want to "fix" them but you can't! Another thing to remember is that when the person is back home your actions also need to be adjusted, drinking alcohol or having it in the house will be a trigger for them to start using again It may not have been the drug of choice but it will bring them right back again. Alcohol is a drug just the same as any illegal drug.
As far as methodone goes, it is more addictive that the drugs they were using to begin with. It is brutal on the liver and makes brittle bones. Methodone is still a drug, it does not fix the problem, in SOME cases it keeps them from going out and risking their lives buying drugs on the street.In a LOT of cases the addict still uses while on methodone

WHEN I DRUG TEST MY CHILD WHO IS ON METHADONE IT CAME UP POSTIVE FOR COKE. HIS ANSWER WAS THAT THE METHADONE HE IS TAKING CAUSES A DRUG TO STAY IN THE SYSTEM LONGER. HE STATED THAT HE HAD NOT DONE COKE FOR OVER A MONTH.

sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that's not true. The half-life of cocaine is about 72 hours, regardless of whatever opiates he's doing. It may stay in his system slightly longer if he did a LOT of it, but a month is still much too long to be plausible.

In order for that to be true, methadone and cocaine would have to be metabolized by the same pathway, and they are not. Methadone is broken down by a certain enzyme, but it is not the same one that breaks down cocaine. (if cocaine was broken down by the same enzyme, it would be listed on the "substrates" table on the link below) There are some drugs known to inhibit the breakdown of others, and these are listed under the "inhibitor" table at the link below. However, cocaine is NOT broken down by this enzyme system, and will be unaffected in any case.

The other medications used for treating heroin addiction are naloxone (used for cases of overdose), naltrexone, and buprenorphine. Buprenorphine is fairly new, but is proving to be an appealing alternative to methadone, since a single injection can be effective for up to 6 weeks. It isn't just medication alone that is used to treat heroin addicts, though. There must also be therapy or counseling, or even rehabilitation.

is for a biology speech about drugs.... no, were not sick ppl addicted to drugs if thats what ur thinking(some ppl will tell me that ¬¬), the point of these thing is to know about them, how to prevent the use of it, and also know the effects of the human body and stuff like that..

well.. my group for the speech has to talk about methadone and i got the part of looking for the chemical composition... so some 1 help me =)
