I am looking for some info. on long term high doses of methadone, It works for me does it work for others?

I was a long time addict to morphine. The methadone worked for me when nothing else would, It has saved my life. Without it I would probably be dead by now and my children would be orphans. I have stayed clean with no relapses for 3 years because of the treatment and the therapy that I attend. Please share your opinion with me. Good or bad.

I was on methadone for 3 years,my doctor shot himself in the head in his office.A new drug is out now that Iam on and its better than the methadone. Its called suboxone you can look it up on line.E/mail me if you have any questions

Methadone detox Day 11 with no dose

Day 11 of me at 0mgs of methadone...i talk a little about the benefits of marijuana during a opiate withdrawals...especially methadone...and get ...

methadone question: I puked 30-35min after dosing & they don't repeat doses regardless. Will I be okay? help!?

I just got home from getting my daily liquid methadone dose (150mg) and puked (30-35 minutes later). I thought I could keep it down, but i was wrong and puked up about a mouthful (my mouth is big, i'm 6'5 260lbs). All I've had this morning was bottled water and my methadone. I managed to only spit out one mouthful of puke and I swallowed the subsequent 4 or 5 times that it came into my mouth and it really tasted like methadone.
Fortunately, I don't think the mouthful I spat out tasted as much like methadone... but I'm worried because I don't wanna go through withdrawals and the whole "half life" theory doesn't seem to apply with me because I'm usually feeling sick and painful again about 20 hours after dosing (still working on finding the right dose for me, I'm a big guy and I had a HUGE tolerance, and even though some people can stay symptom free for 48 hours after theyve been on it for a while, i'm not so lucky. plus, i take it for pain for my crohn's disease which is flaring up right now). They won't repeat doses at my clinic under any circumstances, so I can't call them for help because they'll tell me i'll be fine whether I will be or not. I've read online that usually as long as you don't vomit X minutes (i saw one site say 20 minutes and two say 30 minutes) after dosing you'll be okay but I'm like right at that cutoff.
I just was wondering if anybody has experience in this situation that can help me determine if I'm gonna be safe from withdrawals or not because (even though it's completely against the rules and illegal) my girlfriend has her dose for the day because she got her take home a week before I did (i get mine this weekend) and she will give me some if I need it then. Will I need it?
I guess I'll know myself in a few hours... but any input would be GREAT because she'll be getting up soon and dosing herself and I don't wanna make her save me any of it if I'm not going to need it, plus I'm not trying to get high or overdose on the methadone, I'm not going to take it just in case since even if i did retain all my dose it would just get me high or whatever. thanks yahooligans!

I dont have personal experience with Methadone- but good luck Mate. To you and Your Girlfriend for making the big step to get help in the first place. I know a few people who have managed to get off heroin. They are ok. It took alot of shit. Alot of guts and determination and Im very proud of them. So Good on you!

Methadone is available for pain control only in 5mg & 10mg Tablets. As far as recommending a dose and schedule that should be decided by your doctor. If your presctiption is unclear you should contact your pharmacy or physician. However, thereis some info. I can give you that sometimes doctor either don't give or don't know. This lack of understanding has caused deaths to occur in certain situations. This is a serious medication with serious consequences if taken wrong. Here is some important info that may help save your life and should have been given to you by your doctor...
Methadone can cause life threatening breathing problems which can lead to death. These problems are more likely to happen when methadone is first started or in someone who is not already taking other narcotic (opioid) pain medicines.
It is very important that you take Methadone Hydrochloride Oral Solution exactly as your doctor has prescribed. Methadone stays in the system long after the pain has returned. Do not increase your Methadone on your own or take additional medications if you feel it is not working. Methadone can react with medication even 48hrs after taking a dose. Talk to your doctor about your pain. Your doctor can decide if your methadone dose needs to be changed.

Prevent theft and misuse. Keep your Methadone in a safe place to protect it from theft. Never give Methadone to anyone else even if they have the same symptoms you have. It may harm them and even cause death. Selling or giving away this medicine is dangerous and against the law.
Methadone is used:
to treat moderate to severe pain in people that do not respond to non-narcotic pain medicines;
to control withdrawal symptoms in patients being treated for narcotic drug addiction;
for maintenance treatment of narcotic drug addiction along with other social and medical services. Stopping maintenance treatment of narcotic drug addiction with methadone may result in a return to narcotic drug use.

Who Should Not Take Methadone ?
Do not take Methadone if you:

have severe asthma or severe lung problems.
have a blockage or obstruction in your intestines.
are allergic to methadone or anything else in Methadone
What Should I Tell my Doctor Before I Start Taking Methadone Hydrochloride Oral Solution?
Methadone may not be right for you. Before starting Methadone , tell your doctor about all your medical and mental conditions including a history of drug or alcohol abuse or addiction.

Tell your doctor if you:

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Some medicines may cause serious or life-threatening medical problems when taken with Methadone Hydrochloride Oral Solution. Be especially careful about other medicines that may make you sleepy, such as other pain medicines, anti-depressant medicines, sleeping pills, anxiety medicines, antihistamines, or tranquilizers. Sometimes, the doses of certain medicines (including methadone) may need to be changed if they are used together. Don't take Methadone with antidepressants or benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium, Klonipin, etc)

Do not take any medicine while using Methadone until you have first talked to your doctor or pharmacist. They will be able to tell you if it is safe to take other medicines while you are using methadone.

Know the medicines you take. Keep a list of your medicines and show it to your doctor and pharmacist each time you get a new medicine.

Take Methadone exactly as prescribed. Follow your doctor’s directions exactly. Your doctor may change your dose based on your reactions to the medicine. Do not change your dose unless your doctor tells you to change it. Do not take a higher dose of Methadone Hydrochloride Oral Solution or take it more often than prescribed. This can lead to an overdose and possibly death.
If you take too much methadone or overdose, call 911 or your local emergency number right away.
Review your medical conditions regularly with your doctor to determine if you still need Methadoneor if the dose needs to be adjusted.
When starting treatment with Methadone for narcotic drug dependence, you should be aware that your dose of methadone will “hold” for longer periods of time as treatment goes on.
Stopping Methadone . Ask your doctor for instructions on how to stop this medicine slowly to avoid uncomfortable symptoms. You should not stop taking Methadone all at once if you have been taking it for more than a few days.
Tell all health professionals that treat you that you take methadone.
After stopping treatment with Methadone flush the unused liquid down the toilet.

What Should I Avoid While Taking Methadone ?Do not drink alcohol while using Methadone Hydrochloride Oral Solution. It may increase the chance of having dangerous side effects.
Do not take other medicines with without first talking with your doctor.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Methadone ?
Call your doctor or get medical help right away if you:
have trouble breathing.
have extreme drowsiness and breathing slows down.
have slow shallow breathing (little chest movement with breathing).
fast or slowed heartbeat.
feel faint, very dizzy, confused, have palpitations (irregular heart beat) or any other unusual symptoms.
These can be symptoms that you have taken too much (overdose of) Methadone , or the dose is too high for you. They can also be symptoms of a serious heart reaction. These symptoms can lead to serious problems or death if not treated right away.

Methadone can cause your blood pressure to drop. This can make you feel dizzy if you get up too fast from sitting or lying down.
Methadone can cause physical dependence. Do not stop taking methadone or any other opioid without first talking to your doctor. You could become sick with uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms because your body has become used to these medicines. Talk to your doctor about slowly stopping Methadone to avoid getting sick with withdrawal symptoms. Physical dependency is not the same as drug addiction.
For patients using Methadone for pain treatment, there is a chance of abuse or addiction with methadone. The chance is higher if you are or have been addicted to or abused other medicines, street drugs, or alcohol, or if you have a history of mental problems.
Some common side effects of methadone are lightheadedness, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting and sweating. Other side effects include weakness, headache, constipation, itching, and dry mouth.

Talk to your doctor about any side effects that bother you or that do not go away.

These are not all the possible side effects of methadone. For a complete list, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

How Should I Store Methadone ?
Keep Methadone in a safe place away from children. Accidental use by a child is a medical emergency that can result in death. If a child accidentally takes methadone, get emergency help right away.
Keep Methadone Hydrochloride Oral Solution at room temperature, 59 to 86°F (15 to 30°C).
Always keep Methadone in a secure place to protect from theft.
Dispose of any unused Methadone remaining from a prescription as soon as it is no longer needed. Unused liquid should be flushed down the toilet.

General Information About Methadone.
Medicines are sometimes prescribed for purposes other than those listed in patient information leaflet. Do not use methadone for a condition for which it was not prescribed. Do not give methadone to other people, even if they have the same symptoms you have. Methadone can harm other people and even cause death. Sharing methadone is against the law.
I know this is a lot but it is better to be safe than sorry.

How long should someone wait after taking last dose of methadone before beginning Subutex?

If someone has been taking methadone for nearly 4 years, and has been prescribed Subutex and they keep saying they are afraid to begin the Subutex for fear of acute withdrawals but they had their last dose of methadone 51 hours ago and are experiencing mild withdrawal symptoms, would it be okay to begin the Subutex? They keep referring to the half-life of methadone and have a fear of not waiting long enough..any help appreciated.

if they wait until they cant bare it anymore then they should be ok.. Most important is what their stable dose of methadone was before they stopped.. they should have been taking 30 mgs or less daily before they stopped, if so then they could take the subutex now... if not, then i would recommend they get some methadone, and get down to a stable dose of 30 mgs or less before stopping then wait 24-48 hours and switch to sub.. if they cant get methadone, then wait until you cant bare it anylonger and take the sub

  • A Look Into Detox Symptoms | Bones Fan Magazine

Medical technology has provided specific drugs that can help with detoxification symptoms. I know it sounds odd. Take a drug to get off a drug. But because some of the symptoms are so severe, having these drugs available can be very important. Plus, they are not addictive, and when you are under the care of a doctor, they will monitor your usage very carefully until you won’t have to take those drugs anymore.

One very effective treatment of opiate withdrawal symptoms is methadone maintenance therapy. It is safe when administered under the care of a doctor. Taken orally once a day, methadone suppresses narcotic withdrawal for between 24 and 36 hours. Because methadone is effective in eliminating withdrawal symptoms, it is used in detoxifying opiate addicts. It is, however, only effective in cases of addiction to heroin, morphine, and other opioid drugs, and it is not an effective treatment for other drugs of abuse.

Methadone reduces the cravings associated with heroin use and blocks the high from heroin, but it does not provide the euphoric rush. Consequently, methadone patients do not experience the extreme highs and lows that result from the waxing and waning of heroin in blood levels. Ultimately, the patient remains physically dependent on the opioid, but is freed from the uncontrolled, compulsive, and disruptive behavior seen in heroin addicts. Withdrawal from methadone is much slower than that from heroin. As a result, it is possible to maintain an addict on methadone without harsh side effects. Many MMT patients require continuous treatment, sometimes over a period of years.
