Methadone Drug Addiction .com

I'm currently on Methadone for chronic pain in back, from a severe injury. I'm seeing a pain specialist, and he has tried everything under the sun. I've been seeing him for almost 3years now. Finally, he has me on Methadone pills, 10mg. per pill. I'm advised to take 100mgs a day, in even doses (20mgs 5x per day) well, I did that for about a year...It doesn't seem to help me. My pain doctor will not give me anymore than the 100mgs a day, he does from time to time give me Oxycodone to take in between. My question is, why can't he give me a higher dosage than 100mgs a day? Since I have been on them for so long. Has anyone been on methadone for a long period of time taking more than 100mgs a day? Just unable to bare the pain, need something...open to suggestions.
I have been to chiroprators, acupuncture, I get injections every other month with hot needles....I've had surgery....I am just 35yrs old, don't want to be on pain meds all my life....what is good natural herbs, etc?

you can take more than that but it will eat your kidney tissue and liver tissue, dont do it, I stop taking it for about three months, I ask if I can switch out to something else cheap, since my third surgery my insurance found some technical error and dropped me, so I have to pay for the RXs myself. I take methadose for about three or four months then I take vicadin and or oxycodone for three months,,, after it has been out of your system it starts to work better, be careful, always start out slowly dont take what you were taking, because just in case, like if you got hit by a car, totally not your fault and were hurt and taken to the hospital and they draw blood, they will report to the police what you have in your system and assume it was all your fault. so be careful not to drive with it in your system.


Pain medications slow your metabolism down to a stop and you begin to store fat even if you dont eat differently or less than before it will make you gain weight, it also causes lots of digestion problems, you can take cascara sagrada from the vitamin store to solve that problem and homeopathic medicines found at the healthfood store can sometimes relieve pain to a degree... worth a try. I would not take more than 100 mgs a day, notice how many methadone deaths there have been in the news lately??? It is a tricky medicine, it slows everything down and your heart can just stop, you can develop phenomonia from fluid leaking into your lungs because your heart is not beating fast enough to move it along. but, if you wan to reduce the pain, try doing this... instead of 20 x 5, start off in the Am with 30, and two extra strength tylenol... wait as long as you possibly can (methadone is a long acting, long lasting drug) and then take another thirty at 2PM or 3PM, I can make it to 4PM now, then take twenty at bedtime with a tylenol pm and a hot water bottle or heating pad... then you will sleep better... Ask the Dr. to switch you over to something else to give your body time to clear out the methadone, then come back to it as the other one becomes less affective... good luck, write me if you want more info...

It sounds as if you are wanting to try to use illegally obtained Methadone to treat your addiction at home. This is dangerous and will not work. I am not being judgmental, I tried it. You need to enter a Methadone program. If you cannot do this due to cost check to see if they offer assistance. It varies by state. Check the clinic locator to find out at...

The reason it is so dangerous is because of how methadone works. It lasts 24 to 36 hours which is long after you feel the effects. So if you take an additional dose when it wears off or before it is accumulating in your body until finally you can overdose. The first dose given at a methadone clinic would vary but it doesn't vary as much as people think. The federal regulation guidelines state the following...
"The first dose of any opioid treatment medication should be low if a patient’s opioid tolerance is believed to be low, the history of opioid use is uncertain, or no signs of opioid withdrawal are evident. Regulations stipulate that the initial dose of methadone should not exceed 30 mg. The physician considers carefully the reasons for exceeding an initial dose of 30 mg and documents these reasons in the clinical record." See Page 33 (2) Maintenance Therapy (c)

Many clinics "blind dose" the first week meaning you don't know what you are receiving but I know now that 20mg is the starting point for most everyone at my clinic with an increase 5mg. every other day until the withdrawal is gone, cravings subside and vitals stabilize. The average for opiate addicts is 80-120mg. Now does this mean you should go ahead and take 30 mg on your own and increase it in a couple of days? No! The clinics use a scale called a COWS scale to judge the amount of withdrawal you are in, they require a positive urine test for opiates but they do look at levels to guide them as to whether the amount you say you take is what you have in your urine, the evaluate other attempts at rehab, your health is taken into account, blood is drawn, and many other factors are considered. Plus you have counseling and you take the medication (in the beginning) in front of a nurse! Face it as addicts we need that watchful eye at first to succeed. If we have a bottle of anything that makes us feel better we don't stop till that bottle is gone. After you have been taking the methadone for about 3 months your "thinking" has changed somewhat and you can have a take home dose (one dose). You didn't become an addict in a week and you won't fix this in a week. It is a disease with no cure. But it is treatable. methadone is one treatment. It can be life saving if taken correctly but fatal if used the wrong way. Be safe.

My mother has pancreatic cancer and they switched from hydromorphone to methadone orally. I'm not asking this to decide for her I was just wondering if she was taking the right equivalent dosage.

Is there a reason this information is needed?

Methadone withdrawl symptoms

They have flu like symptoms!They can become shaky,chillor even have seizure like symptoms, they also sweatand stay thirsty.It's a horrible sight and alot of times its scary but they just have to suffer through it until it gets out of there system

I am now terribly dependent and am hopeful this change will be the answer. My doc has prescribed 5 mg every 8 hrs and I'm not doing very well but can''t stand the roller coaster anymore.
I guess the best way to put what I want to know is what is the normal beginner's dose. As I said, I am on 5mg every 8 hrs.

I am on pain meds too, my friend. People like to talk a lot of crap about them, but its the ONLY thing that lets me live a normal life with chronic neck pain & back discomfort. I take oxycodone 30mg. Have tried stronger (but I dont like to SLEEP at work) so I am now dependant on them. Couldn't stomach the methadone. I'm unsure what your question is and if your looking for some other kind of cure, other than surgery, chiropractors or anti-inflammatory meds, these are the only types of meds that will help you not be in pain. take care, keep your head up.
