Methadone Drug Addiction .com

Here's the deal: my girlfriend is going through an unavoidable and total methadone detox. she has dropped from 65mgs to 20mgs just in the past 30 days, and now has completely dropped from 20mgs to 0mgs the very next day. we are now on day 2 of no methadone, and we have NO CHOICE but to wait it out. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to help her cope with the pain of withdrawl, and any ideas of how long it will last?
my girlfriend is now on day 10 of a complete methadone detox, and has just started the vomiting. what, if anything, will work to help settle her stomach and help her eat and sleep?

Take her to Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings.

People there are recovering addicts and alcoholics learning to live without drugs and alcohol and know what she faces and how to survive without picking up again.

The first 30 days clean is recognized with a sobriety coin, then 60, and 90 days. Then 6 and 9 months, and finally the First Year. People in recovery will do just about anything to help her thru the first year.

It might seem stupid but I am looking for a career in this field.
I don't know if I have to take psychology, nursing or other.
I would like to get involved in substance abuse treatments, detoxification, Methadone Detoxification.

This doesn't seem stupid at all given humans will always have substance problems.....you will always have a job, and all the better if you have a passion for this type of work.

A four-year nursing degree is very versatile and will give you more work options. I would choose nursing, unless you exclusively want to be a clinical psychologist in which case you need a PhD in psychology or masters in social work.

I just found out when I went to get my Methadone perscription filled today that the FDA sent out advisorys to all Doctors and Pharmacies prohibiting them from perscribing or selling 40 mg Methadone after Jan.1 2008. Only Detox/Rehab centers or hospitals will have access to this drug. I personally am on 50 mg per day for pain managment & have been for 7 yrs. The nurse at my Dr. office also told me that even though the 5 & 10 mg tablets were not affected, that if any Doctor is caught writing a large perscription of the 5 or 10 mg methadone tablets for a patient, they will be turned in to the DEA. She told me they did this because they've decided that 40 mg Methadone isn't considered to be for pain managment; it is for Opiate detoxification-uh...ok(?. What are others out there in the same situation doing about this? Also, can any Dr. (like my pain mng. Dr for instance) write out a script for Subutex/Bupranorphin or would I have to go to somthing like a 2wk. Detox center? PLEASE HELP!!!

Did they replace the Rx with something else?

they have an obligation to treat you unless you are discharged.
I hope they gave you an equivalent medication, kadian or avinza will do just as well. Are they going to give you something else for your pain.

I am trying to get off prescribed Morphine and struggling to do it on my own. My GP's answer to this particularly problem is to suggest referring me to Drug Services for Methadone, which I have categorically refused. Surely there must be some sort of rehab facility that I can go into in order to get off this evil medication?
The drug rehab facilities don't want to treat me because I have chronic pain. As to the Priory, I have the ten grand alright but I'm not spending my own money on drug detox when it was my own GP that put me in this position and denied me long term physiotherapy, suggesting that Morphine was cheaper!

I wish I could help with this. I do not know of any detox centers in the UK.

Your GP is a jerk!!!

Seek a good center with a strong counseling base and I would recommend a holistic system for withdrawal.

As discussed earlier I have been there and you are in my thoughts and prayers.

But you will be happier if you can get off the drugs and find other ways to deal with this pain.

If when you are off, you continue with the pain, see a pain medicine specialist and express your desire to avoid or minimize any narcotic therapies, they can help you!!

And don't listen to Sabretooth, methadone is harder to withdraw from than oramorph.

Methadone should only be used for psychological addiction to opiates not physiologic dependence. Remember withdrawal from oramorph 6-10 days withdrawal from methadone about 15 days.

Glad the methadone worked for you, as a Pain Medicine Specialist I have used methadone for many patients, because it doesn't have the euphoria side effects and often becuase it is very cheap and many of my patients could not afford the more expensive drugs. I provided the funding for the methadone for many of my indigent patients.

I also was in severe chronic pain for over 5 years and on the advice of my pain specialist took methadone. I found the withdrawals severe, and due to the long halflife of methadone and the metabolites it took about 3 weeks to clear my system. Yes I do know where I am talking from here!!!!

I use a lot of biofeedback, and have through a lot of experimentation found a prophylactic medication which decreases the incidence of pain. In managing pain in patients you have to find the correct treatment for each patient; sometimes that takes some time.
