I have insurance through Kaiser Permanente and would like to obtain methadone for opiate dependence through a regular pharmacy.
Your doctor will not write you a prescription for methadone that you can take to a regular pharmacy. You will need to go through a methadone clinic for some time before you will be considered for a 'medical maintainance plan' which will allow you to obtain a month's worth of methadone to self administer.
I know methadone is used by a lot of people who are getting themselves treated for their opioid dependence. It can also be used for the treatment of pain. I just want to know what the side effects of methadone are and is this safe to use? Wouldn't the user get addicted to methadone also?
There are indeed some side effects that methadone is associated with. These are: nausea, pruritus, constipation, sedation, confusion, and respiratory depression. Flushing and excess sweating may also occur in patients who use methadone orally. If the prescription is followed properly by the patient, he wouldn't get addicted to it. Methadone is safe only when it is not abused by the patient.

Currently many State's Offer this Treatment, The purpose of this Treatment is To Wean addict's off of heroin or other opiate's. But many people are on the treatment for 5+.
-Methadone occupies opiate receptor's and is the stabilizing factor that permits addicts on methadone to change their behavior and to discontinue heroin use...So I guess this is A legal High? I myself are a Physician and have taken methadone before, and it does produce strong euphoria."state defined as a sense of great (usually exaggerated) elation and wellbeing"
I personally do NOT think methadone should be used for opiate dependency. Methadone is a very strong semi synthetic opiate, it's self highly addictive and very dangerous. I am much more impressed with suboxone for opiate dependency for many reasons. It is also a strong semi synthetic opiate, but it is combined with naloxone making inter venous use impossible without negative effects. Suboxone treatment is not strictly regulated by the federal government meaning patients do not need to make daily clinic visits for supervised dosing. It can take up to 5 years of perfect compliance ( clean drug tests ect.) to be allowed take home supplies of methadone. Methadone is highly diverted as many people who cannot afford to or choose not to go through therapy buy it to self detox. Suboxone is not diverted like that. You go into the doctor like any other appointment and you can receive up to a month's worth of suboxone shortly after beginning the program. The discretion of having an office based treatment iis also nice.
The drug Subutex (and Suboxone) is used for treatment for opiate(narcotic) dependence; as is Methadone. However, with Methadone all one needs to do is swallow the pill, with Subutex and Suboxone it must be dissolved slowly under the tongue--sublingually. I don't like the taste and would prefer to simply swallow the pills, but the Dr. and pharmacist say allow it to dissolve slowly until gone under the tongue. Will I start to have withdrawals if I swallow the pill instead of allowing it to dissolve? Also, I'm taking a daily total of 8mgs...2mgs x 4per day. Is that the usual dosage? What are dosages that seem to work the best or are prescribed most frequently?
Usually when a medication is given sublingually it is because it cannot be given orally due to metabolism issues.
When a medication is given orally, it is absorbed through the walls of your GI tract and into the blood stream. The artery it is absorbed into goes directly to the liver, where most drugs are metabolized (inactivated). Some drugs are metabolized to such an extent that you might as well have not even taken the dose at all. This is called the "first pass effect."
If a drug is allowed to dissolve under the tongue, instead of going into your stomach like it seems it is, it is absorbed by a blood vessel under your tongue that does not go to the liver, so the drug doesn't have the "first pass effect" and it will be able to work in your body.

Buprenorphine is better than methadone for opioid dependence in ...
Using buprenorphine instead of methadone — the current standard of care — to treat opioid-dependent pregnant women may result in healthier babies, suggests new findings from an international team led by Johns Hopkins researchers and published in the Dec. 9 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine .
Babies born to mothers taking buprenorphine instead of methadone to counter heroin and/or prescription opioid addiction were likely to need less morphine to deal with drug withdrawal symptoms, spent half as much time in the hospital after delivery and recovered from neonatal abstinence syndrome in half as much time, the study found. Neonatal abstinence syndrome, caused when a fetus is exposed to heroin and/or prescription opioids in the womb, can cause hyperirritability and autonomic nervous system dysfunction, often requiring medication and extended hospital stays for babies born with it.
“In newborns, buprenorphine produces a milder withdrawal than methadone,” says study leader Hendree Jones, Ph.D., a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. “Our results support the use of buprenorphine as the treatment of choice for opioid dependence in pregnant women.”
