When a child is born to a mother with a methadone addiction, that child will usually have a certain sensitivity to the drug, and they can have ...
No where did you come up with that description? LOL Sounds like you may be describing a Downs Syndrome child? Anyway, a child born to a mother on Methadone may experience withdrawal from the drug or they may not. If they do hospitals have a plan in place and the effects are usually mild. Methadone has been used as a safe medication for opiate addicted Moms for over 25yrs. There is no difference in the appearance of a Methadone baby and a non Methadone baby. It has not been linked to deformities of any kind.
I am pregnant right now and on methadone.. I am wondering if there are any other mothers or people in ALBERTA right now that have encountered this same thing? We are a stable family, we have another daughter who is 3. I work for the school board and my husband is a journeyman welder. We have never been involved with social services/police. My doctors had me on a slew on medications in the past year and before I found out i was pregnant I went on the methadone program to free myself from the pain killers. I have fibromyalgia. I am wondering in Alberta if they take methadone addicted babies away from there parents at birth? I am not the typical MMT patient and am really worried about this. The clinic had tried to assure me S.S won;t get involved, but I need to hear real stories from real people to really put myself at ease! Thanks everyone, and no hate comments pls!
If you stop taking methadone during pregnancy there is a great risk for miscarriage so I am not going to risk that. The baby will not develop any kinds of long term problems either. That is a proven fact. I believe my question wasn't about the outcome of birth defects, but thanks for your response. Anyone else have an answer to the question I asked please feel free to respond! :) Thanks
I'm sorry I don't actually have an answer to your question as I'm from Australia.
You should speak to your Dr as they should know the answer. I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
As you are not a drug user or an unfit Mother I highly doubt they would take your baby off you.
Here in Australia babies of Mothers on methadone are not automatically taken away from the Mother at birth. The only time this would happen is when she is also taking drugs and an unfit Mother.
I wish you the best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy and I hope you get the answer you need.
All the best :-)
A friend of mine is contemplating taking custody of her newborn grandson who was born to a heroine addicted mother. I have extensive experience with heroine addicted adults and few if any, ever get off methadone. What are the short term and long term implications of caring for a methadone baby? Should the grandmother have access to Narcan?
Heck the Dr. will know and so will a therapist that can help. Also the children and families can help with that too. Get all the info and hug the little guy!! So sorry!! But you can work with anyone!!
My aunt is pregnant and uses methadone, will it effect the baby?
Children's services won't take the baby. The baby will most likely be born addicted to methadone but with the proper care he will be fine. Methadone is actually approved for use in pregnant women. The baby may go through withdrawal I certainly hope not however, methadone has a very long half-life so the withdrawal from it is very extended.
Picture of Health: Bupe better than methadone for addicted moms ...
Pregnant women who were given buprenorphine instead of methadone to treat heroin and prescription drug addiction had healthier babies, according to a study led by Johns Hopkins researchers.
The study, published in the Dec. 9 New England Journal of Medicine , found that those given buprenorphine were likely to need less morphine to deal with withdraw symptoms from the opioids. They also spent half the time in the hospital after delivery and recovered from neonatal abstinence syndrome in half the time.
That syndrome is caused when a fetus is exposed to opioids and means more medications and hospitalization for babies. I can cause hyperirritability and autonomic nervous system dysfunction.
Methadone, a synthetic opiate, is the current standard of care. Buprenorphine is newer and comparable to methadone in its side effects and outcomes for the mother, researchers said.
“In newborns, buprenorphine produces a milder withdrawal than methadone,” said study leader Hendree Jones, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Hopkins’ school of medicine , in a statement. “Our results support the use of buprenorphine as the treatment of choice for opioid dependence in pregnant women.”
