If you are on MMT, then you are taking the methadone in a legally prescribed manner.

Just tell the guys that you are on the program, and you are taking methadone.

They might still refuse to accept ex-junkies, but that's your fault. Serves you right.

any help for withdraws from methadone after over 10 yrs of daily use at 150mg?

was taking this for heroin addiction. It has been 3 weeks and the discomfort pain sleepness nights dnt stop.

The usual withdrawal issues from methadone are at least 15 to 21 days, and then you will have minor withdrawal issues for some time after that.

As DynodyKk has said, if you have gone 3 weeks you are through the most severe part of this process, but you may have some additional issues.

Usually it is best to wean off the medication some before stopping, but many have found that the withdrawal issues after several years are not significantly decreased with weaning.

There are some things which can help, without starting another drug, if you would like to email me, I will send you some information. As DynodyKk has said there is a lot of benefit to appropriate nutritional supplementation, and hydration. I have a full list of the doses and supplements which are helpful. Also for sleep I would recommend using melatonin. This is non-addictive, but helps with sleep. I have more information on this, but start at 5mg and take 2mg every 30 minutes until you are asleep up to 30 mg. I have had $1000/day heroin patients sleep the first night on this plan for at least 4 hours, and increase their sleep after that.

Prior to going into pain mangement, I was on 160 mgs of methadone a day for 5 years, in addition to fentanyl, and stopped without switching to another medication. I did have some significant withdrawal issues, but I had researched some techniques to help, and have refined these over the years when working with others who are trying to stop.

Suboxone is a great medication, but it is another addictive opiate, and if you have gone through most of the withdrawal, then it might not be in your best interest to start another medication now.

It sounds as if you are wanting to try to use illegally obtained Methadone to treat your addiction at home. This is dangerous and will not work. I am not being judgmental, I tried it. You need to enter a Methadone program. If you cannot do this due to cost check to see if they offer assistance. It varies by state. Check the clinic locator to find out at...

The reason it is so dangerous is because of how methadone works. It lasts 24 to 36 hours which is long after you feel the effects. So if you take an additional dose when it wears off or before it is accumulating in your body until finally you can overdose. The first dose given at a methadone clinic would vary but it doesn't vary as much as people think. The federal regulation guidelines state the following...
"The first dose of any opioid treatment medication should be low if a patient’s opioid tolerance is believed to be low, the history of opioid use is uncertain, or no signs of opioid withdrawal are evident. Regulations stipulate that the initial dose of methadone should not exceed 30 mg. The physician considers carefully the reasons for exceeding an initial dose of 30 mg and documents these reasons in the clinical record." See Page 33 (2) Maintenance Therapy (c)

Many clinics "blind dose" the first week meaning you don't know what you are receiving but I know now that 20mg is the starting point for most everyone at my clinic with an increase 5mg. every other day until the withdrawal is gone, cravings subside and vitals stabilize. The average for opiate addicts is 80-120mg. Now does this mean you should go ahead and take 30 mg on your own and increase it in a couple of days? No! The clinics use a scale called a COWS scale to judge the amount of withdrawal you are in, they require a positive urine test for opiates but they do look at levels to guide them as to whether the amount you say you take is what you have in your urine, the evaluate other attempts at rehab, your health is taken into account, blood is drawn, and many other factors are considered. Plus you have counseling and you take the medication (in the beginning) in front of a nurse! Face it as addicts we need that watchful eye at first to succeed. If we have a bottle of anything that makes us feel better we don't stop till that bottle is gone. After you have been taking the methadone for about 3 months your "thinking" has changed somewhat and you can have a take home dose (one dose). You didn't become an addict in a week and you won't fix this in a week. It is a disease with no cure. But it is treatable. methadone is one treatment. It can be life saving if taken correctly but fatal if used the wrong way. Be safe.

I'm 10 weeks pregnant and on methadone. Has anyone had experience with this and what can you tell me about it?

ALL MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS including OB/GYNs advise NOT to get off methadone while pregnant due to the withdrawl symptoms. Please no negative comments. Only those with experience need answer.

You are correct that your doctor will most likely tell you to stay on the Methadone. The reason for this is 1) the withdawal can cause miscarriage; 2) it prevents risk of relapse. However, the main risk is that your baby will be born addicted and have to stay in the hopsital and be weened off the drug.

There is a newer drug that has a lower rate of withdrawal in the baby, and thats Suboxone/Subutex. A lot of people switch from Methadone to Suboxone (or Subutex) when they are pregnant ( or even if they arent). In Suboxone treatment, you get a prescription so you dont have to go the clinic everyday. Also its only a partial-agonist so it is believed the risk for addiction in the fetus isless, although it definitely does happen.

If I were you, I'd talk to my addction professional about switching to Subutex. Either way, you definitely need to let your Ob/Gyn and your addiction professional know asap.

How bad will withdrawls be from methadone. After being on for 10 years?

Basicly due to self choice and some finacial probs, My mother is going to end her methadone this friday. She has xanexx to take along with some pain pills to help with the withdrawls. But can u tell me whats to be expected. We do know that she could do this from rehab but no insurance to cover it. And the clinc that she was in is a total ass and will not withdrawl her (which is VERY wrong). So can u tell me whats to be expected and how long it will last..... thank u

I hope she is not planning to jump from a large dose. I don't think it's feasible if her dose is more than say 10 mg a day. Even then, withdrawals can be pretty difficult if she's been on methadone for ten years.

Depending on her dose, she can expect several weeks of typical opiate withdrawal symptoms, sleeplessness, cramps, diarrhea and cravings. The chance of relapsing into heroin use is very high, and if she's taking Xanax as well she is at risk of overdosing.

Stopping methadone suddenly is almost never successful. The best way of coming off is to reduce the dose slowly, say by 5 mg per week, down to about 20 to 30 mg and then switch to buprenorphine under medical supervision. The switch needs to be done carefully, because it can set off moderately severe withdrawal symptoms if it's done at the wrong time.
