What do you think about using methadone for opiate addiction?

It works wonderfully for my herion addiction and I don't want to go off of it since I know I'd immediately start using again. So many people consider it a "heroin substitute". However, I DO NOT get high on it and it is medically controlled so when taken correctly, there is little risk of an overdose. Not to mention all the awful things that go along with heroin addiction like the risk of contaminated needles, drugs laced with deadly substances, doing illegal things to get your "fix", and the fact that you will eventually end up dead or in prison. The problem is that I still have problems with alcohol and cocaine and methadone DOESN'T help with those addictions. I want to get help for all my substance problems but almost all rehabs are VERY AGAINST Methadone. I don't want to be on Methadone the rest of my life. I will eventually wean myself off (VERY SLOWLY) so that I don't get sick (it is addictive like heroin). Any thoughts about this? Please be kind. This is rough!

I'm not really sure if you can mix it with the methadone or not but Revia (Naltrexone) can help with the cravings for both opiates and alcohol. You may want to ask the clinic where you get the methadone.

And go to an NA and AA meeting. You can find local meetings at www.aa.org and www.na.org

Methadone/opiates and pregnancy - For medical professionals only, please.?

I am a 32 y/o woman with extreme back & neck pain which has gotten progressively worse over the last 12 years. 2+ years ago when I became pregnant (unexpectedly) I was on very high amounts of opiate pain medications (160 mg oxycontin, 10-15 percocets/day, + anti-depressants, Vallium, etc.). Immediately upon finding I was pregnant I began speaking with my doctors about decreasing and eventually getting off all medications. I was very concerned about my baby being born addicted and having to go through withdrawal symptoms and after much debate, my doctor (OB and pain management) assured me it was safe for me to detox off of my medication. It was difficult but I did it. I ceased most meds and decreased the opiates (oxycontin) to 10 mg. twice a day which my OB and the local university hospital decided was where I should stay through delivery.

Tonight I was just watching a program on TLC about these young girls who are on methadone and pregnant. The doctors told them that it is "perfectly safe to stay on their regular methadone prescription throughout the pregnancy" and explained that the baby would "just have to detox after he/she was born." It was stated that "detoxing a woman off methadone or other opiates is dangerous to the health of the fetus and could result in miscarriage, low birth weight or very premature birth." I did a little research on my own and I have found several sources that confirm this.

My question is, in my situation, when I found myself 3 months pregnant and on all that medication, would most doctors have recommended that I remain on the medication through delivery and make my new baby detox outside of the womb or would they recommend I detox over the course of the rest of my pregnancy so my baby would be born without any chemical dependence? Also, what is (medically) the best course to take?

NOTE: I am so glad I detoxed myself prior to my daughter being born. Honestly, my pain management doctor's initial reaction was to keep me on all the meds and I pushed to detox for my baby's sake. I've seen the withdrawal effects on innocent babies and I would never be able to make her go through that agony alone. I could not live with myself. I just watched these mothers (on the TLC program) make excuses for their behavior by saying "its a disease" and how "horrible it was to see their baby go through that but that there was nothing they could have done." Is this true? If the methadone-addicted mother WANTED to detox herself over the course of her pregnancy would the doctor support that decision or is it really safer to have the mother continue on her regular dose and make the baby detox alone?

Thank you!
Joe Z - I think you are the one on drugs here. What are you talking about prenatal vitamins for? That has NOTHING to do with my question. Did you even read my question???

It is a bad idea to remain on the narcotic pain medicine while pregnant as this would not only induce a "withdrawl" for the baby, but potentially cause permanent neurological damage. You want to take the least amount of medicine possible, and overall maintain a healthy diet. I would suggest going to a pharmacy and purchasing an OTC prenatal Multivitamin.

In tablet form (by prescription) as an out patient which is the most potent opiate besides methadone/physepton

It is Heroine, if I am understanding you correctly. Some people shoot up just once and are hooked.

more specifically, help with opiate addiction please help me.?

ok my last question wasn't detailed very well i guess, i want to have a baby eventually (not to fill a void but to have a familly. but i am on methadone, a low dose, i am drug free, the methadone makes me feel normal/not high, I have tried to quit pain killers many times but am lazy, cant eat or sleep and basicaaly cannot get off couch for months I have heard from doc and others that my chances of my baby having withdrawal is low, and the only babies that are put on a drip is on very high dosesif u get preg on meth they will not let you come off, as it poses more risk. I cannot quit i have tried, believe me i would love to but my brain is depleted of chemicals normal pl have and i care about nothing when off of it but i cant stand being on my butt for 24 hours i go insane i have to work, cook clean, etc. even showering is a chore when i am off this crap, has anyone ever successfully quit methadone/opiates, how? does anyone know of anyone who has had a baby on low meth dose, how were th
also i have tried everthing, rehab, counselling, groups (every one) i have quit cocaine and tat was a walk in the park as there was no withdrawal really i have been clean off that for over a year the opiates is impossible it seems though. Plus i would take enough opiaes (prior to methadone) that i am surprised i never overdosed and if it wasnt for methadone i'd probably be dead. Thought that would help.

I know you said you have triedeverything. You have already taken your first step to recovery.I admitted i was powerless.run dont walk to a na meeting they have them at all hours. They have some one to talk tothey have been where you are.Right now do it oneminute at a time.I careabout you.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCES with Methadone and Opiate addiction.. please!?

I am 19 and about to come off of a 1 year opiate addiction. (Percocet, Hydrocodone) I was taking AT LEAST 10-14 percocet or hydrocodone (depending on strength) each time (bout 2-4 times a day)
I have told my family and we have all decided to put me in Rehab. and thank goodness my family is going to pay for it. I would be on the streets in another month if I kept on.
Anyways...
Will it be easy to start off with Methadone detox? Has anyone gone through this before? What Happend?

Thanks A Lot!!

I have never been through this but have an opinion. If it were me, I'd go "cold turkey" in a medical detox if needed. It takes just 3-5 days to get most substances out of your system. I would not continue with putting more drugs in your body (Methadone). You need to be drug free, make it happen. Best wishes with your recovery, you can do it. God bless.
