What exactly is Ibogaine, and how successful is it for the treatment of opiate addiction?
Beautiful Grounds - Michael's House

I was told of a new medication to help overcome an opiate addiction, unfortunately I haven't been able to find out much about it. I believe that it is only available at a treatment facility located in New Mexico...so, it really makes me wonder if it's even a legitimate treatment approved by the FDA. I also wonder if there have been many studies done on it, and what the statistics are concerning its rate of success.

Ibogaine treatment is not available in the United States despite showing promising results.
"Proponents of ibogaine treatment for drug addiction have established formal and informal clinics or self-help groups in Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, France, Slovenia, the Netherlands, Brazil, South Africa, the United Kingdom and New Zealand, where ibogaine is administered as an experimental compound."

Anyone else find suboxone to be the most effective treatment for opiate addiction?
Relax Poolside - Michael's House

Suboxone is a partial agonist at the mu-opioid receptor and an antagonist at the kappaopioid receptor. If used properly, Suboxone can be a life-saver for the hard-core heroin or opiate user. Along with a program of recovery that address the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of addiction, Sub is a tool that buys them time to sort out their personal lives, work their recoveries, and deal with what they are trying to avoid that drove them to numb themselves in the first place. Unfortunately, Suboxone is not subsidized as methadone is, and can be very cost prohibitive to many struggling with addiction.

Why is methadone used for addiction treatment when it happens to be an opiate just like heroin?
Location, Location, Location - Michael's House

Wouldn't people get addicted to methadone too? I know people started out believing that heroin is some kind of treatment for morphine addiction. What if methadone is the same way? I'm just really curious.

Methadone has already been proven to be safe and effective which is why it is used for addiction treatment. For so long as methadone is properly prescribed, it won't be sedating nor intoxicating. Its effects will not get in the way of normal activities. Its taken orally and prevents withdrawal symptoms for as long as 24 to 36 hours. Aside from that, when methadone is taken, it relieves the individual's heroin craving, the biggest cause for relapse. It is also medically safe, so even if people use it for ten years straight, it's okay. With the help of counseling and therapy, methadone will be able to bring people back their productivity and sober lives.

How come methadone is used for drug addiction treatment when it's also an opiate?
The Estate - Michael's House

This just confuses me. Wouldn't the patient be then addicted to methadone?

Methadone is utilized for the treatment of drug addiction because it has been proven to be effective and safe. If it happens to be prescribed properly, it is neither sedating nor intoxicating. Its effects do not hinder normal activities. It prevents symptoms of withdrawal for 24 to 36 hours. When it's taken, it also relieves the individual's craving for the drug. If combined with therapy and counseling, methadone has the power to bring people back to their sober, productive lives.

  • Truly Affordable :: Understanding Suboxone Treatment and It's Side ...

Suboxone treatment provides people dealing with opioid addiction (e.g., “opiates”) a safe and effective way to manage the withdrawal process with minimum impacts from physical and dangerous side effects. Suboxone is also known by its clinical name, buprenorphine, and since 2002 it has been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in treating opioid and opiate addictions.

The National Alliance of Advocates for Buprenorphine Treatment (NAABT) recently published guidelines for the safe administration of suboxone treatment : (1) addict must be under the care of a certified medical practitioner, (2) addict must already have entered withdrawal before beginning a course of suboxone treatment or detox, and (3) addict should plan not to work or other strenuous activity on the first day of treatment, and may resume work or other activity the following day.

In regard to side effects, suboxone has been known to cause some mild sleeplessness, especially noticeable at night. Additional symptoms will result from the mild to moderate withdrawal accomplished prior to beginning suboxone treatment. Using suboxone, many addicts and patients report that by day three at the latest, they feel restored to their previous physical and mental state.
