difference between Methadone Hydrochloride and Methadone?
Methadone Hydrochloride 10mg - v3.0

my mom went and got her monthly pills and its a different methadone its says "hydrochloride" after methadone and it looks different

It's the same sort of thing. The active ingredient, the methadone, is the only real thing you need to worry about. The hydrochloride is just a chemically bonded chloride group that shouldn't affect the methadone whatsoever. Methadone comes with hydrochloride generally, so chances are the labels that you had before only listed the main ingredient, methadone, and recently with newer rules about being specific of the whole ingredient they are now mandated to say hydrochloride. Overall, no difference.

Do I have to dissolve my 40MG Tablets of Methadone? Why am I not supposed to chew and/or swallow them?
Methadone Hydrochloride 10mg - v2.0

I have been on methadone maintenance for about 3 years now & I just gained something called Step 30 which means that I don't have to go in to the clinic every day anymore. Instead, I come in once a month to pick up a months worth of pills. When I went in to the clinic I was getting liquid methadone, but now I have the Methadose 40mg Methadone Hydrochloride Tablets For Oral Suspension USP. On a different label they are also called Methadone HCL 40mg Diskettes. I'm told that I am not supposed to chew and/or swallow them before I dissolve them in water. Unfortunetly, they taste horrible and even mixing them in OJ is nasty. My question is, why can't I break them up & swallow them, & if I did what would be the worst thing that could happen? If I do absolutely have to dissolve them first, do you have any advice on a less painful way to administer them? Thanks!

I have had the liquid methadone & the wafers. I also had trouble drinking the dissolved solution. I experimented taking them in different ways & found that if you break them up into 1/4 pieces or 1/8 pieces & swallow them that you won't notice a difference between that & dissolving them.

What pain med should I take?
Methadone Hydrochloride 10mg - v

I take oxycodone/apap 5/325, 1 every 4 hours for back pain. they work pretty good, and of course I like the feeling I get. I am out of meds till friday, and i am in alot of pain today. I asked a couple friends that "USE" pain meds and they all had different kinds. So now I don't know what to take. They are all high doses so I am going to cut them into smaller doses. i want something as close to what I take now, because I can still function when I take my pain meds, and I HAVE to be able to function, a little high feeling is ok, but not knocked out. Please help and tell me what order you think is best. I take them orally NOT IV, NOT SNORTING the pills are...
1. morphine sulfate SR 60mg
2.methadone hydrochloride 10mg
3.opana ER Oxymorphone HCl ER 40 mg
Thanks!

Lol, hipster clearly novice. Advising against the methadone when Opana is at least twice as strong even orally. If your looking for pain management get the opana, cut it into at least 8 parts, take 1 in morning and at most 1 at night. Probably won't need that. And what feeling is this you get from 5mg of Oxycodone? Is it stupidity?

BBC Horizon: Is alcohol worse than ecstasy?

"Is alcohol worse than ecstasy?" is a BBC documentary based on a study by Professor David Nutt, a psycho-pharmacologist at Bristol University and member of the Advisory Council on Misuse of Drugs, published early 2007. He and his team analyzed the evidence of harm caused by 20 drugs. They asked a group of 29 consultant psychiatrists who specialize in addiction to rate the drugs in categories related to physical harm, related to the likelihood of addiction and related to social harms. They also extended the analysis to another group of 16 experts spanning several fields including pharmacology, police, chemistry, forensics, psychiatry and legal services. - IMDB

The ranking:

20 Cathinone (Khat)
19 Amyl nitrite (Poppers)
18 MDMA/ Ecstasy
17 GHB
16 Anabolic steroid
15 Methylphenidate (e.g. Ritalin)
14 LSD/ Acid
13 4-MTA
12 Solvents
11 THC (Cannabis)
10 Buprenophine hydrochloride
9 Nicotine (Tobacco)
8 Amphetamine/ Speed
7 Benzodiazepine (e.g. Valium)
6 Ketamine
5 Alcohol
4 Methadone
3 Barbiturates
2 Cocaine/ Crack cocaine
1 Heroin

For those who have seen this or read the report, what do you think of their rankings?

I hope you're joking, Ty T. Marijuana is definitely on this list and it's ranking surprised me.

The reasoning of the experts is sound, in that alcohol is more dangerous in general based on the fact that it is far more prevalent so the frequency of abuse related disease, death and injuries is therefore greater. Looking at an individual case, Ecstasy has far more serious medical manifestations and presents similar judgment and coordination problems related to operating a motor vehicle as compared to alcohol, and so from that perspective, Ecstasy is more dangerous to an individual. It should probably be rated as more dangerous than THC, less so than Ketamine. Millions of people use alcohol responsibly on a daily basis without abusing it or suffering detrimental effects. The same cannot be said for Ecstasy.

  • The drug methadone and its benefits

    Methadone hydrochloride research

More research has been done on methadone than most other prescription medications. Many studies, ever since Dole and Nyswander’s groundbreaking study of 1966, have conclusively shown the benefits of methadone for the treatment of opioid addiction. It works for any type of opioid addiction, both heroin and pain pills.

“Evidence-based” is a frequently used phrase in medicine today. It means that a certain treatment is backed by quality studies that prove its effectiveness. Treatment of opioid addiction with methadone is one of the most heavily evidence-based treatments we have in medicine today. Study after study has shown multiple benefits: reduced transmission of HIV, reduced rate of crime, and reduced death rates.  We’ll review these benefits of the drug methadone here.

    1. Opioid treatment programs using methadone reduces HIV transmission

Methadone treatment reduces the transmission of HIV. Fortunately, this disease now is viewed as a chronic disease, rather than a death sentence, since the newer highly active HIV drugs have been available. Unfortunately, thirty percent of new diagnoses of HIV are related to injection drug use. A review of all studies of HIV transmission among methadone maintained patients versus untreated opioid addicts showed that treatment with methadone significantly reduced behaviors leading to increased HIV risk. In one study of HIV negative intravenous heroin users followed over eighteen months, 22% of untreated addicts converted to HIV positive. But only 3.5% of patients converted to HIV positive who were on methadone maintenance for the entire eighteen months.
