Is Methadone used for anything other than opioid dependency?
Beautiful Grounds - Michael's House

My parent's friend is staying at their house for a little while and he has to go to a clinic to receive 125mg doses of Methadone every day. When I asked my mother about it she said that he had neurological problems from a contaminated water supply where he used to live. I have never heard of Methadone being used in anything other than opioid dependency, and this person has a history of addiction that I know of, including gambling and alcohol. Could the methadone be used to control these addictions also?
I know for a fact that some of his physical problems did come from a contaminated water supply, but it is an ongoing investigation so I prefer to not say exactly where. He does use a cane and has an extremely abnormal gait.

As others have mentioned, methadone is used for pain management in certain circumstances.

While the primary use, and the use that the drug is known for, is management of opiate addiction, it also sees a fair bit of use as a pain management drug. Methadone has certain properties that make it useful in some circumstances, notably, it is relatively high potency, compared to most other common opiates, and it has an extremely long half life in the body.

These two properties make it useful in patients who have a chronic, high level of pain. It only needs to be dosed once a day, compared to even controlled release forms of other strong pain killers, which need to be dosed twice a day, or more often.

What you're describing implies a measure of neurological problems (difficulty walking, abnormal gate). These conditions are frequently accompanied by a high level of pain, as a result of nerve and muscle damage. This would be a circumstance where methadone is certainly a useful drug.

Hell, anything is better than methadone. That stuff is actually more addicting than heroin.

Can you take anything to ease withdrawal from suboxone?
Relax Poolside - Michael's House

My boyfriend has been on suboxone since June, for methadone dependency. We cannot afford the $800.00 a month bill anymore so he has been easing himself off, and has gotten down from 32mg a day to 2mg a day. He has went 2 days and was going through so much pain he took 2 mg's again. I thought muscle relaxers may help but he has no health insurance so no prescription. Is there anything else he can take to ease the withdrawal pains in his feet and legs? I don't know what to do for him.

alcohol would probably help with the pain but is not very healthy. Same goes for marijuana.
I would say nothing really but to create new habits to do that are not harmful
like drinking water or chewing gum

I have little income while needing to be prescribed methadone to better my life. I have attached my letter!?
Location, Location, Location - Michael's House

To Whom It May Concern;
My name is Jewel, a 34 year old male with a mental and physical dependency to narcotic pain medications. This all started in the summer of 2006 when I had suffered a work related back injury. My most severe pain only lasted about six months. With the right doctor, an increasing potency, increased doses of opiate medications, and my around the clock desire for pain relief had developed a new dependency to opiates.
Who ever should read this letter, I would like you to know that my choices which feed the addiction have been altered by a conscious mind which only I have control of. On the other hand a chemical free, non-toxic, sober mind would have never made some of those choices I have in the last three years. Even if you have or had in the past, lead an addictive lifestyle such as that similar to my own, it would still differ in some ways do to your environment, your sources, or your own unique situation. There is one thing myself and others with addiction have in common, that is the feeling of emptiness we have inside when our drugs are separated from us. After awhile this feeling of emptiness leaves us with a since of loneliness as if our problem is singled out from the rest of the world. Finally our emotions become altered by leading us to believe we can’t function therefore making a sober conscience something we fear the most. We become trapped in our own world of excuses like; “I can’t quit now!”, “I am not ready!”,”I can take less and less till I quit for good!”, “It won’t kill me to get more cause as long as I feel better, there will be motivation to get things done!” Or we find other reasons to seek relief which would reflect a selfish action to our environment. We do this by pushing our morals and beliefs aside just to cure the moment. As time progresses these behavior patterns leave us looking back at our past with shame and guilt. Instead of blaming our addiction, we blame ourselves while in denial of our illness caused by drugs. Our denial manipulates every excuse we give others while supporting our drug of choice. These behavior patterns are very controlling in such a way that they interrupt our true lifestyle. I have done some horrible un-humane things to get my drug(s) of choice, things like; switching from one doctor to the next, changing from one pharmacy to another, making my back pain look worse then it really is so those around me might offer relief, changing my stories around to manipulate someone to believe everything I might say, or other desperate actions in effort to get relief. I have managed to keep things legal thus this far however if these problems continue, my behaviors might lead to criminal activity. I really hope and pray that never happens! I hate my life right now and if it wasn’t for my loving wife and children, I would most likely be dead or in an institution by now.
Before the addiction, my life was productive, drug free, and I was always the upbeat and cheerful type of guy. Now it seems as if all those encouraging memories have been stored in the back of the mind I am so afraid these old memories will loose there light while becoming clouded by every moment I chose to use drugs. I also regret the times my addiction hurt others for my own benefit. I know from experience that these are learned behaviors that will soon affect my very since of well-being. Once that sober lifestyle has been forgotten, my memories from my life before the addiction will become peculiar to me. I guess that would mean a place that I once called home would become something unusually strange and unfamiliar to me.
To this day I desperately have the need for a cure but can’t afford a doctor who might prescribe certain opiate maintenance medications. There are two specific schedule II medications that have actually made my life more productive without the horrible side affects, these medications were used only for a short while because I could not afford or even find a provider of the medication. The two medications were “Subtoxon 8mg, 1 per day” and the other was “Methadone 10mg, 3 times per day”, both were given to me by close friends and family for not only recovery but also as a mild pain relief. The Subtoxon never really helped with pain but the methadone worked wonders for all my pain needs as well as my road to recovery. If these drugs should be prescribed they are only available on a daily dosage basis. I am not available for this method of treatment because of my limited resources, plus I have a daily obligation to a family of six that rely on my sole support. This would include my four young children!
Like others, I have a great fear of loosing control of my true inner self. This addiction has it’s barrier points however I have so far managed to limit my dependency to three major opiate type narcotics or so called barbiturates; Hydrocodone based and (or) Oxycodone based medications. I am an experienced Commercial Driver with over 12 years of my life spent

Methadone: Helpful or Harmful? | Heroin Addiction | Heroin Rehab ...

Oklahoma – Methadone was developed as a substitute treatment, used by those struggling with heroin addiction.  The theory is that one will substitute the methadone for their heroin addiction, reducing withdrawal symptoms, and then they will be weaned off of the methadone.

Unfortunately, theories do not always display the outcome.  One Narconon graduate reveals her experience of using methadone as a substitute for her synthetic heroin addiction.

“I got on methadone to get off heroin and Oxy Contin which was a huge mistake,” explains Heather, a former methadone addict and recent graduate of the Narconon program. “I stopped taking heroin but developed a dependency towards the methadone.  For me, methadone was even more addictive than the Oxy Contin or Heroin. ”

For more than 35 years methadone has been used to treat opioid addiction, such as an addiction to heroin or Oxy Contin.  More recently, concern has been raised that methadone can be just as devastating of an addiction as the drugs it is intended to replace.
