Whats the difference between long and short term recovery plans in chemical dependency treatment?

In alcohol and chemical dependecy programs what is the diffference between long and short term recovery plans.

It really depends on how you get there, but if it is a alcohol problem they need to work on treatment dealing with that and vice versa for drugs. Treatment varies from person to person so the amount of time will also vary.

How do you fight a parole officer who wants to put a mother in jail who needs chemical dependency treatment?

This is in Ramsey County Minnesota. The mother has no violent crime history, and is a felon due to the fact that there was crystal meth in her car when they arrested her for shoplifiting some chicken salad from a grocery store. She has horrible ADD, like I have never seen or heard of, truly, she can't recall or focus on ANYTHING. Anyhow, she needs a good long treatment, not to be thrown into a population of other felons, which is totally proven to not help her in any way as far as I have ever read or seen. The parole officer is an angry-seeming bloke who is hell-bent on putting her behind bars. She is an IV drug user as of a few months ago, having moved it up from smoking meth for years past. What is goofy is that he wants her in jail first, then treatment. HELP

The Ramsey County courts will likely remand a felon to a Minnesota State Correctional Facility where she can be put in drug treatment while serving time. Another option could be to be sent to an RTC, or Regional Treatment Center which is a locked facility for mental health treatment patients who are court-ordered.
The parole officer may want the order of the court to force this person to get the treatment they seem to need, and since that person is an IV drug user now while NOT in custody, putting them into custody may be the best option as the PO sees it.

does anyone know where to get treatment for co dependency ?

I think that it is likely that i am co dependent. I really want to change but wondered if it is possible to do this with self help book or if you have to go to see someone? Any views would be appreciated.

I don't mean to sound harsh but codependency is a publishers nonsense, it is not recognised as a diagnostic issue by any Mental Health Professionals. Basically it refers to having a few issues with coping on your own, you don't need to label it like you are sick or ill! Most of us have dependency issues on others some of the time, if you feel your dependency issues are holding you back and causing you pain most of the time then I suggest you think about having a course in psychotherapy, there is no shame in it and it will help far more than a self help book. Self help books largely only help the authors get rich! Another tip would be to never fall into the trap of self diagnosis, you can convince yourself of all kinds of problems when at a low ebb!

Is there a free sight offering treatment from narcotic pill dependency?

There are many sites. From experience, the better method is perhaps a detox at first. Once the substance is removed from the body, the physical/chemical dependency is put into remission. Then, the hard part comes; the psychological dependency. The best way, i believe is to interact or at least listen to others that are overcoming the addiction/dependency. There are many NA (Narcotics Anonymous) meetings, everywhere, or at least within a few miles of where you or the "pill head" is located.

The obsession to get high and stay high is extremely powerful. Lets face it, the crap makes people feel good (at first).

This quote from Anonymous makes good sense and is a start to helping all people to entertain some ideals:

God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can and Wisdom to know the difference.

Now, Here is a more detailed guide to self-help. These are the 12 steps of Narcotics Anonymous;

The 12 Steps of NA

How it Works

If you want what we have to offer, and are willing to make the effort to get it, then you are ready to take certain steps. These are the principles that made our recovery possible.

1. We admitted that we were powerless over our addiction, that our lives had become unmanageable.

2. We came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

3. We made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

4. We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

5. We admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6. We were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

7. We humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

8. We made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. We made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. We continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. We sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

This sounds like a big order, and we can’t do it all at once. We didn’t become addicted in one day, so remember—easy does it.

There is one thing more than anything else that will defeat us in our recovery; this is an attitude of indifference or intolerance toward spiritual principles. Three of these that are indispensable are honesty, open-mindedness, and willingness. With these we are well on our way.

We feel that our approach to the disease of addiction is completely realistic, for the therapeutic value of one addict helping another is without parallel. We feel that our way is practical, for one addict can best understand and help another addict. We believe that the sooner we face our problems within our society, in everyday living, just that much faster do we become acceptable, responsible, and productive members of that society.

The only way to keep from returning to active addiction is not to take that first drug. If you are like us you know that one is too many and a thousand never enough. We put great emphasis on this, for we know that when we use drugs in any form, or substitute one for another, we release our addiction all over again.

Thinking of alcohol as different from other drugs has caused a great many addicts to relapse. Before we came to NA, many of us viewed alcohol separately, but we cannot afford to be confused about this. Alcohol is a drug. We are people with the disease of addiction who must abstain from all drugs in order to recover.

It works if you work it, so work it- you're worth it!
