The Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence 8-Day Residential Treatment Program is an intensive program for people who have not been effectively treated ...
I need to get my niece to undergo addiction treatment. She lives with us, and I already talked to her about this. We're really close, and she now sees that her dependence upon alcohol isn't going to do her any good. How will I know which addiction treatment center will be right for her?
You can use the links below to help you in your search for addiction treatment centers. Ask them about their treatment methods and programs. Better yet, you can take your niece to a doctor so that her situation can be properly assessed. The doctor will know what kind of treatment program will be right for her and which treatment centers will be able to provide what she needs. Good luck! I'm glad that your niece has finally seen the folly of her actions. May she get treated soon. :)
why try to compare?
When a patient is in extreme pain, opiates are dosed sparingly to avoid dependence, but pain treatment is the #1 priority. Anyone including YOU would become addicted if doses were high enough over a long enough period of time. Then the patient is left to deal with a debilitating chemical dependence which they often try to hide due to social stigma.
This is VERY (100%) different from escapist/euphoria drug seeking, such as Obama did for SEVEN LOOONG YEARS. That is not "experimenting" that is deliberate brain damaging usage. He said he used cocaine and marijuana but avoided "smack" (how strong of him!). He said he was a confused teenager but he did drugs by his own admission well beyond his teenage years, which shows a weakness in mental fortitude. PET scans show marijuana use leads to permanent brain damage. Leno asked him "did you inhale?" and Obama joked "that was the point".
He is being honest that he has no wisdom or strength or judgement.
Instead of stating he made a mistake doing drugs, he gives excuses (typical Obama baby). This is NO ROLE MODEL for kids who can choose whether or not to use drugs.
You obviously think we are still in a place where we try to hold our leaders to a higher standard than just the average Joe Blow on the street.
Unfortunately, we are now in a place where it is more popular to use the Oprah Winfrey touchy-feely approach and make excuses for their shortcomings and give them several chances because they "try so hard", rather than to find leaders who are worthy of their position.
The drug Subutex (and Suboxone) is used for treatment for opiate(narcotic) dependence; as is Methadone. However, with Methadone all one needs to do is swallow the pill, with Subutex and Suboxone it must be dissolved slowly under the tongue--sublingually. I don't like the taste and would prefer to simply swallow the pills, but the Dr. and pharmacist say allow it to dissolve slowly until gone under the tongue. Will I start to have withdrawals if I swallow the pill instead of allowing it to dissolve? Also, I'm taking a daily total of 8mgs...2mgs x 4per day. Is that the usual dosage? What are dosages that seem to work the best or are prescribed most frequently?
Usually when a medication is given sublingually it is because it cannot be given orally due to metabolism issues.
When a medication is given orally, it is absorbed through the walls of your GI tract and into the blood stream. The artery it is absorbed into goes directly to the liver, where most drugs are metabolized (inactivated). Some drugs are metabolized to such an extent that you might as well have not even taken the dose at all. This is called the "first pass effect."
If a drug is allowed to dissolve under the tongue, instead of going into your stomach like it seems it is, it is absorbed by a blood vessel under your tongue that does not go to the liver, so the drug doesn't have the "first pass effect" and it will be able to work in your body.
Is it higher than the US or other countries?
In the United States, approximately 8 percent of people aged 18 and older suffer from alcohol abuse and/or dependence. This abuse or dependence costs upwards of $1.7 billion in medical treatment, lost earnings, casualty damages and criminal/legal costs.
1 in 13 people for the Uk works out as 7.69% so lower than the US.
I think a higher percentage of people in the US are teetotal so taking that into account the US figures are a lot worse than the UK.
Depends on your definition of Alcohol Abuse. If you mean physical dependency, then pretty low. However according to alcohol concern (an NGO here in the UK), around 22,000 death in the UK are linked to alcohol (disease and accidents)
According to the British Medical Association 1 in 13 adults are dependent on alcohol either pscyhologically or/and physically.
About 1.1million adults in the UK are in need of treatment for alcohol dependency, however no where near that amount get the help they need.

Drugs of abuse change all the time and most parents don't even know some of these dangerous drugs exist. Most don't have a clue that there are street terms that reference these drugs, if their child is experimenting with them they would never know. It's extremely sad to think of the amount of young people that have either lost their life due to partying with friends one night or that party night changed their lives forever.
Many innocent young people go to these get-togethers or parties and have never done drugs before and have no intention of ever doing them. It's not unusual for someone to slip something into their drink just for the hell of it, they think it's funny. Parents need to be aware of the common drugs abused today because parties and socializing isn't the same as it was in the past, it's much more dangerous. There are more toxic and serious drugs and substances floating around than could ever be imagined so hopefully this information will be helpful to parents and caregivers who aren't aware.
